RUTGERS-NEWARK DEFEATS NJCU, 77-61, IN PHYSICAL NJAC MATCHUP

The first New Jersey Athletic Conference game of the 2010 portion of the schedule proved to be a physical affair with 60 total fouls whistled and Rutgers-Newark had four players reach double figures as the Scarlet Raiders defeated host New Jersey City University, 77-61, on Wednesday night on “Coach Charlie Brown Court” at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center.
 
NJCU dropped its fourth straight game since opening the year at 5-1, as its record drew even at 5-5 and 1-1 NJAC. Rutgers-Newark won its sixth consecutive game and improved to 10-3, 2-1 NJAC. NJCU continues to lead the all-time series, 57-9.
 
Newark never trailed as NJCU struggled with its shots. The Knights shot 28.8 percent overall (17-59) and just 2-of-17 from three-point range (.118), while making 25-of-44 at the line (.568). The Raiders didn't fare much better at the line, converting 25-of-40 (.625). But the visitors shot 46.9 percent from the floor (23-49) and 42.9 percent from three-point distance (6-14). NJCU did out-rebound the Raiders, 46-35. It was the first time Newark was held below 50 percent shooting or 80 points during its current winning streak.
 
The Raiders received a game-high 22 points, with three blocks from senior forward Deshawn Singleton (Passaic, NJ/Passaic), and despite shooting 6-of-15 from the field, he made 10 foul shots (10-15). Sophomore guard Greg Moore (Jersey City, NJ/Bayonne) proved to be a huge contributor off the bench, scoring 16 points in 26 minutes on 5-of-9 three-point accuracy and 5-of-10 from the floor.
 
R-N also had 13 points (3-6 FG, 6-7 FT) from senior guard James Johnson (Summit, NJ/Summit). Senior forward Phil Barnes (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) tallied 11 points (3-4 FG, 5-10 FT) and nine rebounds. The top four players for the visitors combined for 62 of its 77 points. Freshman guard Al'Don Muhammad (Irvington, NJ/Queen of Peace) had six points and four assists,
 
For NJCU, the lone player in double figures was freshman small forward WALIK ALBRIGHT (Jersey City, NJ/Create Charter), who collected 13 points (6-11 FG). Freshman power forward ISAIAH JOHNSON (East Orange, NJ/East Orange Campus) nearly had a double-double, finishing with nine points and 10 rebounds (six defensive). Junior power forward TOM McDERMOTT (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) had 10 rebounds (seven defensive).
 
Newark jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the first 5:04 of the game, led by Singleton with six points. Moore hit four three-point baskets in the first half, making his first with 13:49 left for a 15-4 lead. NJCU was able to draw within seven, 19-12, when freshman guard STEVE RAYMOND (Asbury Park, NJ/Asbury Park) provide a spark off the bench with a steal and two buckets, but the visitors answered right back with a three-pointer from Moore and gradually increased the margin.
 
The Raiders led by 17 at the intermission, 40-23 and took its largest lead of the game (19 points) in the opening minute of the second half. Newark led by at least 12 points the remainder of the game, before prevailing by 16.
 
Both teams return to action on Saturday, January 9 with NJAC games. NJCU will host The College of New Jersey at 4 p.m. while the Raiders entertain Rowan University at the Golden Dome in Newark, NJ at 8 p.m.
