JERSEY CITY, NJ (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Sophomore forward ASHLEY CUNHA (Edison, NJ/Edison) had a six-point effort with two goals and two assists and junior forward JENNIFER ALBUJA (Union City, NJ/Hoboken) added a pair of tallies as New Jersey City University remained perfect at home with a 6-1 non-conference victory over Medgar Evers College on Columbus Day afternoon at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field. Junior forward JULIA CASERES (Union, NJ/Union) contributed a goal and two assists to become the all-time leading scorer in New Jersey Athletic Conference history with 168 career points.
NJCU continues its best start to a season in program history, improving to 9-4 after 13 games. The Knights are 6-0 at home this season and have won eight straight and 15 of its last 17 games in Jersey City. Medgar Evers falls to 7-5-1 and has its three-game winning streak snapped. NJCU leads the all-time series, 8-0 (46-8 goals differential).
The Knights outshot Medgar, 45-6, including 23-2 in the first half, and had a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Junior midfielder MARGIE ALFANO (Randolph, NJ/West Orange) had a goal and an assist for the Knights and sophomore defender/midfielder CHELSEA SPETHMANN (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Hasbrouck Heights-Wood Ridge) had an assist.
Junior goalkeeper LAURA ROBINSON (Edison, NJ/Edison) made three saves in 74:20 of action, allowing one goal. Freshman NICOLE HERNANDEZ (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) played the final 15:40 between the pipes without making a stop.
Medgar Evers lone goal came from junior midfielder Laura Morales (Brooklyn, NY/FDR) after the Knights had a 6-0 lead. Sophomore keeper Yishka Chin (Brooklyn, NY/Herbert Morrison) had nine saves; the Cougars had one team save.
Caseres increased her career totals to 71 goals and 26 assists for 168 points in only 54 games over three seasons at Rutgers-Newark (2008) and NJCU (2009-present), breaking the NJAC career points record of 164 she had shared with Noelle Meeke of Kean University from 1995-97. She is three goals shy of equaling Kean's Fred Guiran (74 goals from 1990-92) for the most goals by a player of any gender in NJAC history.
Albuja notched the 63rd and 64th goals of her career to move into a share of sixth place in NJAC history with 137 career points in 50 career games.
Albuja gave the Knights a 1-0 lead at the 17:55 mark of the first period as she collected a ball on the left side of the midfield circle and raced to the box, blasting a shot into the right of the target for her seventh goal of the season.
Caseres broke the all-time NJAC scoring record at 34:49, as she gave NJCU a 2-0 halftime margin. Cunha controlled the ball on the left endline, crossing a beautiful ball to the near right post for a one-touch goal. It was Caseres' 19th goal of the season and 49th in two seasons at NJCU and her fifth game-winner this year.
Less than three minutes into the second half, Cunha scored the first of her two consecutive goals. At 47:52, Caseres crossed a ball into the box from the right and Cunha ripped a shot through the legs of the Cougar keeper.
Cunha extended the lead to 4-0 at 61:22 with her eighth goal of the season. Alfano delivered a thru ball onto the right wing to a sprinting Caseres on the right endline. Caseres fed Cunha all alone in the box for an easy one-timer and a double assist for Caseres and Alfano.
Under four minutes later, Albuja netted her fourth goal of the season. Spethmann uncorked a long throw-in from the left sideline and Albuja headed a ball from the center of the box that crossed the goal line before the MEC defense or keeper could clear it at 65:20.
NJCU capped its scoring just 2:29 later, netting its third goal in a span of 6:27. Cunha slipped a beautiful thru ball from the midfield area that unleashed a breakaway by Alfano. The 1-on-1 situation was finished as Alfano rifled home her third goal of the season.
Medgar's only goal came at 71:55. With a loose ball at the 17, Morales lofted a high shot just underneath the crossbar before Robinson could backpedal to knock it away.
NJCU had several other quality scoring chances. Among the best, Caseres was alone in the box at 9:40 but wasn't able to convert. Cunha had a hard shot in the box that Chin blocked at 13:13 and a Cunha pass to junior midfielder KATLIN VARGO (Edison, NJ/Union Catholic) at 14:21 nearly led to a goal. Rookie midfielder ALEXIS FREES (Linden, NJ/Linden) rifled a shot in the box at 36:34 that MEC stopped with a team save. Robinson also stopped a first half MEC breakaway at 40:50 with a sliding clear at the top of the box.
In the second have, Cunha's shot just 1:12 into the period from close range was again blocked by Chin and Frees just missed a gorgeous header off an Albuja corner kick 25 seconds later before Cunha cashed in at 47:52. Robinson also had a nice stop of a long, high shot, backpedaling to catch it at 58:07. Alfano just missed high at 63:47 off a throw-in into the box.
NJCU looks to bring its NJAC record to .500 overall when it returns to action on Wednesday, October 13 at 7 p.m. with a conference game at Rutgers-Newark in Newark, NJ. MEC hosts College of Mount Saint Vincent on October 12 at 4 p.m.
