MONTCLAIR, NJ (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com) | The New Jersey City University men's soccer New Jersey Athletic Conference game against long-time rival Montclair State University on Saturday, October 16 has had a time and site change. While the game will still be played at Montclair State, the game, originally scheduled to start at 12 p.m. on the grass MSU Soccer Park field, will now be played at 8 p.m. under the lights on the turf Sprague Field.
It will be the first meeting since NJCU recorded a shocking upset of the then #3 ranked and unbeaten Red Hawks in Jersey City on October 30, 2009, in the final game of the season for the Gothic Knights.
NJCU's 2-1 overtime victory was so electric, the winning goal from that contest was a Top 10 play on ESPN's Sportscenter. Perhaps the biggest upset in Division III men's soccer in 2009, the win snapped Montclair State's 19-game NJAC regular season unbeaten streak (23 games including the NJAC Tournament) while also ending the Red Hawks' 37-game regular-season unbeaten streak among all games. It was the highest ranked opponent NJCU has ever defeated in 52 years of collegiate soccer sponsorship.
Montclair enters the game in first place in the NJAC at 10-2-2 overall and 5-1-0 in the league and tied for sixth in the NSCAA South Atlantic Regional rankings and 29th by D3soccer.com. NJCU (6-8, 1-5 NJAC) will seek to keep its dwindling conference tournament hopes alive.
