ALEX JOHANESEN (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) is officially the most accomplished player at her position in school history. The two-year co-captain distributed 32 assists during a tri-match against Clark University (Ma.) and host City College of New York to become the all-time leader in assists in the 28-year history of the NJCU women's volleyball program, but the Gothic Knights dropped both matches, falling to Clark, 3-0 (25-9, 25-15, 25-16) and CCNY, 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-20) at the Nat Holman Gymnasium.
NJCU falls to 7-17 overall. Clark, which won both of its matches, is 11-10 while CCNY, 1-1 on the day, is 18-15.
Johanesen entered the morning with 2,665 helpers—12 shy of the previous program record of 2,677 by Nadia DaSilva Ducos (2004-07). Johanesen's current total is 2,697 in 359 career sets.
************MATCH 1: CLARK UNIVERSITY 3, NEW JERSEY CITY UNIVERSITY 0 (25-9, 25-15, 25-16) ************
In the first-ever meeting between NJCU and the Worcester, Massachusetts based member of the NEWMAC Conference, the Cougars posted a .326 team hitting percentage and 34 kills (34-6-86) while limiting the Knights to a 23-24-105 attack line (-.010).
Johanesen distributed a match-best 19 assists—breaking the record in her 356th career set during game three. Sophomore libero AMANDA DOPICO (West New York, NJ/Memorial) collected 11 digs and junior outside hitter TABITHA JORDAN (West New York, NJ/Memorial) had 19 digs and seven kills, but committed 10 attack errors. Freshman outside hitter MARISSA SCARPA (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) finished with six kills and seven digs, while sophomore middle hitter BRITTANY EREZUMA (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) landed five kills.
Junior 6-foot-0 middle blocker Kristin McGinty (Vail, CO) proved to be difficult to defend. She hit .450 with 11 kills (11-2-20). Junior 5-foot-11 outside hitter Amira Tranchell (Falmouth, MA) hit .538 with eight kills and only one error (8-1-13). Freshman setter Rachel Spera (North Hollywood, CA) and sophomore setter Katie Freaney (Old Lyme, CT) each had 12 assists and junior defensive specialist Kortney Kelley (Barnstable, MA) delivered 12 digs.
Clark hit .481 in the opening set and had 15 kills (15-2-27). With the game tied, 7-7, the Cougars scored eight consecutive points to grab a 15-7 lead and closed the set scoring 18 of the final 20 points, taking the frame, 25-9.
NJCU had an 11-10 kills advantage in set two and were within two points of the Cougars in the neutral court match, 15-13, after a Jordan kill. Once again, Clark closed out the set with a decisive run, flooring 10 of the final 12 points for a 25-15 decision.
The third set was the most competitive with six ties and four lead changes. A kill by Jordan made it 2-2 early in the set as Johanesen provided career assist 2,678, to break the all-time record.
The Knights led 8-6, but a setting error, four NJCU attack errors and an ace by Freaney put Clark in front, 12-9. NJCU closed within 12-11 and 17-14 on a Jordan ace, before the Cougars scored eight of the final 10 points, winning, 25-16.

Two CCNY players reached double figures in kills and the Beavers limited NJCU to an attack line of 19-21-98 (-.020) in sweeping the second match. CCNY leads the all-time series, 15-13.
CCNY senior 5-foot-10 middle blocker Melissa Blass (Oneonta, NY) hit .400 with eight kills and no errors in 20 attempts, stuffed six blocks (three solo) and landed four aces. Junior setter Alexis Kinsman (Mystic, CT) had a double-double with 29 assists, 17 digs and three aces.
The Beavers also received 10 kills and a .412 percentage (10-3-17) from sophomore outside hitter Zuleyka Polanco (Bronx, NY) and freshman 5-foot-10 middle blocker Ruth Reyes (Bronx, NY) contributed 10 kills (10-5-20, .250), nine digs and two aces. The three top CCNY hitters accounted for 28 of its 39 kills as the hosts hit .218 as a team (39-17-101).
Johanesen finished with 13 assists and Jordan collected eight of NJCU's 19 kills, adding eight digs and four aces. Dopico defended 17 digs. Freshman middle hitter ASHLEY LATUSHKO (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) contributed five kills and Erezuma picked up two aces.
In the opening set, an ace by Erezuma cut NJCU's deficit to 16-12 before Blass helped the hosts pull away, taking a 22-14 lead which resulted in a 25-16 game win. The Beavers grabbed an early 15-6 lead in set two capped by a pair of aces by Reyes and won 25-14.
In the third set there were six ties and three lead changes. The Knights jumped out to an early 9-2 lead but couldn't hold it as CCNY scored 10 of the next 11 points. When Blass landed her second ace of the set, CCNY led 13-10. NJCU stayed alive, taking a 16-14 lead after three Beaver attack errors. CCNY tied it at 17-17 and Latushko evened it at 18-18 with a winner before CCNY jumped ahead, 22-18 on kills by Polanco and Reyes, a Blass block and Kinsman ace, and prevailed 25-20.
NJCU will play its final home match of the 2010 season on Tuesday, October 26 at 7 p.m. when it hosts Kean University in a make-up New Jersey Athletic Conference match at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center on “Coach Charlie Brown Court.” It will be Senior Night as NJCU honors the four-year career of Johanesen.
