KEAN DOWNS NJCU IN HOME FINALE, 3-0; ALL-TIME NJCU LEADING SETTER ALEX JOHANESEN HONORED ON SENIOR NIGHT

JERSEY CITY, NJ (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University all-time leading setter ALEX JOHANESEN (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) celebrated Senior Knight 2010 with her eighth career double-double, but Kean University hit .283 as a team and defeated the Gothic Knights, 3-0 (25-26, 26-24, 25-22) in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match on Tuesday night on “Coach Charlie Brown Court” at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center.
 
Kean improves to 19-15 overall and 2-5 in the NJAC—winning for the eighth time in its last 10 matches. NJCU (7-18, 0-7 NJAC) drops its fourth straight. The Cougars lead the all-time series, 28-7, although NJCU had won six of the previous seven meetings entering the contest. It was the final home match of NJCU's 2010 campaign.
 
Johanesen, who became NJCU's all-time leader in assists on October 23, upper her all-time program record to 2,718—good for 14th in NJAC history—as she delivered 21 assists and 12 digs for her third double-double of the season, and hit .375 with four kills (4-1-8). Johanesen, also NJCU's most accurate server in program history with a .974 percentage in 1641 attempts, crossed the 500 digs threshold on the night she was honored for her career accomplishments and now has 509 digs to go along with her 196 career service aces.

Kean hit .283 as a team with 40 kills (40-12-99) and was led by the accurate attack of junior middle hitter Tara Richey (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) who hit .571 and did not have an error while striking 12 kills in 21 attempts. She added three blocks (one solo).
 
Kean junior outside hitter Nicole Bolash (Clinton, NJ/Voorhees) tallied a match-best 15 kills and hit .345 (15-5-29), adding eight digs and two aces. Senior setter Colleen Masterson (Rahway, NJ/Union Catholic) had a solid match—posting a double-double of 29 assists and 11 digs, while landing seven kills without an error in 15 tries for a .467 percentage.
 
Kean also received a match-high 17 digs with two aces from junior libero Mary Aldana (Jersey City, NJ/Saint Dominic Academy). Junior outside hitter Heather Aliotta (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) finished with 11 digs and three aces.
 
NJCU freshman middle hitter ASHLEY LATUSHKO (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) led NJCU with a career-high 10 kills, hitting .148 (10-6-27). She exceeded her previous best of nine kills against Rutgers-Camden on October 21.
 
Junior outside hitter TABITHA JORDAN (West New York, NJ/Memorial) had nine kills, five digs and three aces. Sophomore libero AMANDA DOPICO (West New York, NJ/Memorial) collected 10 digs while freshman outside hitter MARISSA SCARPA (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) chipped in nine digs. Sophomore middle hitter BRITTANY EREZUMA (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) landed four kills.
 
Kean never trailed in the opening set and hit .333 as a team with 12 winners (12-3-27). The match was tight midway, with the visitors ahead, 14-12, before scoring five straight points, highlighted by a pair of aces by Bolash. Kean cruised from there, winning 25-16.
 
In set two, both sides held leads and there were two ties as Kean owned a 12-11 edge in kills. After NJCU two attack errors handed Kean a 20-15 cushion, it appeared the Cougars were headed for a 2-0 match lead. But the Knights rallied, scoring eight of the next nine points to seize a 23-21 lead. Erezuma had a kill to trim the lead to 20-16 before Jordan floored a pair of winners for a 20-19 deficit. After an NJCU service error, Kean had one of its own, Bolash missed an attack and Latushko notched a kill for the 23-21 lead. Bolash followed with a pair of kills sandwiched around an error by Jordan for a 24-23 Kean lead. Jordan tied it with a kill for 24-24. But Richey posted a kill and Aliotta uncorked an ace for a 26-24 win and a 2-0 match lead.

After a 10-minute break for the Senior Knight ceremonies, the final set was again competitive, featuring nine ties and two lead changes. Kean hit .361 as a team in the game with 16 winners (16-3-36); NJCU countered with 12 kills. Bolash hit .455 with six kills 96-1-11) and Richey had an impressive .625 percentage with five kills in eight attempts in the frame.
 
The Knights led the set, 13-10 and 15-13 before an NJCU service error and Richey kill tied it at 15-15. NJCU owned a 17-16 cushion when Masterson and Erezuma traded kills. After NJCU committed two errors, Jordan and Aliotta chalked up winners and a Kean service error saw the game tied at 19-19. An NJCU service error made it 20-19 and Richey floored a shot for a 21-19 edge. Latushko cut it to 21-20 with a winner, but Bolash and Richey collected kills after an NJCU attack error for a 24-20 advantage. A kill by Johanesen and a Jordan ace gave NJCU life before Kean sealed the set, 25-22, and the match, with a kill from Masterson.
 
NJCU will play its final two matches of the season on the road, beginning on Thursday, October 28 with its final NJAC match against Rowan University at 7 p.m. in Glassboro, NJ. Kean visits William Paterson University at the same time.
