GLASSBORO, NJ (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Rowan University posted a .414 attack percentage with 43 kills and only seven errors in 87 attempts and claimed a 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-16) victory over New Jersey City University in the final New Jersey Athletic Conference match of the 2010 season, played on Thursday night at Esby Gymnasium.
Rowan improves to 16-11 (5-3 NJAC) and clinches the #4 seed in the NJAC Tournament and a home match against William Paterson University. NJCU finishes the league schedule 0-8 and falls to 7-19 overall, for its fifth straight setback. Rowan leads the all-time series, 23-3.
The Profs hit .429 in the opening set with 15 kills (15-3-28). After a .375 percentage in the second set with 15 more winners (15-3-32), Rowan concluded the match with a .444 attack rate and only one error on 13 kills and 27 attacks in game three.
In defeat for NJCU, senior all-time leading setter ALEX JOHANESEN (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) increased her program record to 2,735, dishing 17 assists. Junior outside hitter TABITHA JORDAN (West New York, NJ/Memorial) had seven kills, seven digs and four aces. Freshman middle hitter ASHLEY LATUSHKO (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) added five kills and freshman outside hitter MARISSA SCARPA (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) chipped in seven digs, two aces and three kills with no errors in 12 attempts. NJCU was able to force two ties in the second set but never led in the match.
Rowan was led by sophomore outside hitter Katie Havlicek (Midland Park, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy), who hit .500 with 13 kills (13-1-24). Sophomore opposite Megan Mondelli (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) had a better hitting percentage at .588 while landing 11 kills (11-1-17) and providing nine digs and three aces. Freshman setter Nikki Ciandella (Hoboken, NJ/Roselle Catholic) had a double-double with 28 assists, 10 digs and four aces. Freshman 6-foot-0 middle blocker Krissy Collins (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) hit .533 with eight kills and no errors on 15 swings.
NJCU concludes its 2010 season on Friday, October 29 at 7 p.m. with a non-conference match against Delaware Valley College in Doylestown, PA; it will be the first-ever meeting between the schools.
