JERSEY CITY, NJ (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University senior setter ALEX JOHANESEN (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) became only the second player in program history to record 2,500 career assists and the Gothic Knights swept a non-conference match from Medgar Evers College, 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-23) on Thursday evening on “Coach Charlie Brown Court” at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center.
NJCU snaps a four-match skid, improving to 6-10 overall. Medgar Evers, which had won seven of its last nine matches, falls to 8-6. NJCU leads the all-time series, 14-0—all wins via 3-0 sweeps.
Johanesen, who entered the match two assists shy of the milestone, increased her career mark to 2,526 helpers by providing 28 in the match. She is now just 151 assists shy of the program record of 2,677 by Nadia DaSilva Ducos (2004-07). She also became the 17th player in New Jersey Athletic Conference history to reach the 2,500-assist threshold.
Junior outside hitter TABITHA JORDAN (West New York, NJ/Memorial) posted a match-high 10 kills, hitting .140 (10-7-23) with six digs and two aces and sophomore middle hitter BRITTANY EREZUMA (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) continued her stellar play, landing seven kills and a .250 attack percentage (7-2-20).

Johanesen quickly notched the milestone early in the opening set when a Gomez kill made it 6-2. The Knights scored eight of the next 10 points for a 13-4 margin, and extended the lead to 18-8, before cruising to a 25-11 final. Erezuma hit .600 in the set (3-0-5) and Jordan (3-1-5). NJCU vaulted out to a 17-7 cushion in the second set before winning by 11 as Jordan again hit .400 with three winners (3-1-5).
The Knights landed 15 kills in the final set and needed each one to bounce back from an early 7-1 and 11-4 deficit. Latushko had a smart kill, pushing the ball into the open back corner and Jordan followed with a kill before sophomore libero AMANDA DOPICO (West New York, NJ/Memorial) aced the Cougars, making it 14-11. An ace by Johanesen made it 15-13 and Gomez floored back-to-back kills prior to an MEC error and NJCU evened it at 17-17. A Latushko ace and Gomez kill made it 20-17 as the Knights rally extended to a 6-0 run. An ace by Henry cut it to 20-19 before a backrow kill by Jordan and winners by Erezuma and Jordan gave the hosts a 23-20 margin. MEC was able to trim it to 23-22 and 24-23 on NJCU errors, but the Knights sealed the win with a kill from Latushko.
NJCU is back in action on Saturday, October 9 in Poughkeepsie, NY when the Knights meet Marietta College and Vassar College in a non-conference tri-match beginning at 2 p.m. MEC hosts Hunter College on October 11 at 11 a.m. in a CUNYAC match.
