POMONA, NJ (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Juniors KAITLIN VARGO (Edison, NJ/Union Catholic) and MARGIE ALFANO (Randolph, NJ/West Orange) scored a pair of second half goals for New Jersey City University, and the Gothic Knights outshot Richard Stockton College, 15-14, but the Ospreys, which owned a 3-0 halftime lead, defeated the Gothic Knights, 5-2, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game on Saturday afternoon.
Stockton improves to 6-5-2 overall (1-3-1 NJAC). The Ospreys, whose first five games of the conference schedule have come against the top five teams in the current league standings—The College of New Jersey, William Paterson University, Rowan University, Kean University and NJCU—pick up their first league win of the season and lead the all-time series, 16-0.
The Knights (8-4, 2-3 NJAC) had not allowed more than three goals in a game this season but gave up a season-high five to have their two-game winning streak snapped. Even with the loss, NJCU's 8-4 record after 12 games is the best in program history. NJCU outshot the Ospreys in the second half, 12-5.
Stockton was led by Samantha Bean (Manchester, NJ/Manchester Twp.) with two goals. Kiera Hines (Deptford/ Deptford), Leah Pocoroba (Galloway/Holy Spirit) and Dailey Todd (Millville/ Millville)also scored for the Ospreys.
Junior goalkeeper LAURA ROBINSON (Edison, NJ/Edison) made four saves for the Knights. Stockton goalkeeperSarah Hinkle (Mullica Hill/Paul VI) made three saves in 66 scoreless minutes. Cara Parliament (Manchester, NJ/ Manchester Twp.) played the final 24:00, allowing two goals with three saves.
Trailing 5-0, Vargo's first goal of the season came moments after the keeper change (67:28) before Alfano netted her second goal of the season at 79:10.
Alfano had three shots—all on goal—and sophomore forward/midfielder ASHLEY CUNHA (Edison, NJ/Edison) added three shots. Meanwhile, junior All-NJAC sweeper NICOLE SARICA (Linden, NJ/Linden), who missed more than a month and nine total games after suffering a leg injury on September 5, returned to the starting lineup.
NJCU returns to action on Monday, October 11 at 1 p.m. when it hosts Medgar Evers College in a non-conference game at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field in a makeup of a September 13 postponement.
