READING, PA (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Junior AMY BREHM (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) paced the New Jersey City University women's bowling team with a 202.80 average and 233 high game and the No. 8 ranked Gothic Knights, the defending Northeast Conference regular season champions, had a 195.25 per player average in 20 games as NJCU posted a 3-2 overall record on day one of the first NEC conference meet of the 2010-11 season.

NJCU improved to 10-8 overall and 3-2 in the conference—defeating Long Island University, 955-784, intra-city rival Saint Peter's College, 932-909 and No. 10 ranked Sacred Heart University, 1011-933. The Knights dropped a 971-923 decision to Monmouth University and fell to No. 9 Kutztown University in a well-bowled contest, 1088-1001. All five matches were five-person traditional team games.

No. 15 St. Francis leads the conference standings after going 5-0 and No. 1 ranked Fairleigh Dickinson University was 4-1. NJCU, Sacred Heart and Kutztown are tied for third at 3-2. No. 13 Adelphi University and Monmouth when 2-3. Long Island, Saint Peter's and Saint Francis University (Pa.) posted 1-4 ledgers.

Brehm had a five-game pinfall of 1014 in the leadoff position and exceeded 200 three times and 225 twice for a 202.80 average. Her five-game line was 181-201-173-233-226.

NJCU had two other starters average a 194 or better. Junior JENNIFER DAUNNO (Carteret, NJ/Carteret), a First-Team All-NEC selection last year, averaged a 196.00 on the opening day with 980 total wood and a 217 high game. She had a line of 194-217-174-206-189.

Senior NICOLE DREJERWSKI (Levittown, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic), also a First-Team All-NEC pick last year and the reigning NCAA Division III National Player of the Year, had a 194.40 average in the anchor position with 972 total wood and a 227 high game. She had a five-game set of 188-158-197-202-227.

Sophomore KELLY DAUNNO (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) had a 187.89 average in five games and pinfall of 939 (207-178-213-179-171). Freshman NICOLE BAGINSKY (South River, NJ/Cardinal McCarrick) subbed into the third match, then received credit for two full games in the fourth and fifth contest and finished with a 194.00 average and 388 pinfall with scores of 190 and 198.

Freshman CATHERINE ROTOLO (Edison, NJ/Edison) had a three-game set of 530 (185-178-167; 176.67). Freshman ASHLEY LANE (Brick, NJ/Brick Township) completed the last eight frames of KELLY DAUNNO's game in the fifth match.

Brehm continues to be the most positive surprise for the Knights to begin the 2010-11 campaign. In her first year with the program last year she had a 179.5 average in 22 games as a reserve on a club that reached the NCAA national semifinals, finishing fourth.

Already this season, Brehm, now as a starter, has increased her average by close to 10 pins per game. In her first nine games of the season she has total wood of 1700 and a 188.89 average. She tossed a strike in the first four matches of the afternoon.

FRANK PARISI, in his 11th year as head coach, attributed her improvement to Brehm's dedication to improving this summer and her practice sessions with assistant coach RUSTY THOMSEN. “It's been because of hard work and because she's very coachable. She worked hard all summer on her own game and has been dedicated. Rusty continues to work with her at practice to fine tune [her mechanics] and she has gone on and done well during competition.”

In the first match of the day, NJCU cruised past Long Island by 171 pins, winning 955-784. The Knights have never lost to LIU and improved to 9-0 all-time against the Blackbirds. KELLY DAUNNO paced NJCU with a 207 while JENNIFER DAUNNO added a 194.

In the last four seasons, NJCU is a combined 13-4 against its John F. Kennedy Boulevard

neighbor, Saint Peter's. And in the first meeting this year, the Knights trailed the entire match heading into the ninth frame. But JENNIFER DAUNNO, who shot a 217 in the match, struck on her final four shots, including three straight in the 10th frame and Brehm chalked up a 201 to complete a 932-909 come-from-behind victory.

In the first-ever meeting between NJCU and first-year program Monmouth, KELLY DAUNNO shot a 213 and Drejerwski added a 197 but the Hawks surprised the Knights with a 47-pin, 971-924 win.

NJCU bowled its best in the final two matches of the day and exceeded 1,000 pins in each contest, but split.

You cannot play defense in bowling and despite a 233 by Brehm, 206 from JENNIFER DAUNNO and a 202 from Drejerwski, Kutztown prevailed by 87 pins, 1088-1001 in a high-scoring match. Baginsky added a 190 for NJCU. The Knights lead the all-time series, 13-10 against the Bears. NJCU averaged a 200.2 as a team in the match.

In the final match of the first day of the NEC meet, NJCU secured an important win over rival Sacred Heart, the 2010 NEC Tournament champions, 1011-933. The Knights posted a 202.2 per person average and won by 78 pins. Drejerwski tossed a 227 and Brehm uncorked a 226 and their brilliant performances, complemented by a 198 by Baginsky, allowed NJCU to rebound from an early deficit of nearly 60 pins as the Knights proved to be consistent throughout the match.

“I think we bowled well,” Parisi said, summarizing the opening day of the conference play. “This is the toughest conference in the country, by far and you can't play defense. But if we keep bowling well and improving—which they're doing—good things will happen.”

On the second day of the NEC meet on November 14, the Knights will meet St. Francis (NY), Adelphi, FDU, and Saint Francis (Pa.), beginning at 9 a.m. The meet is the first of three this season; the top eight teams in the 10-team conference will advance to the 2011 NEC Championship Tournament.
