JERSEY CITY, NJ (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com)...New Jersey City University
shot 53.6 percent from the field and equaled its highest scoring outburst of the season as the Gothic Knights utilized a balanced scoring attack to blow past John Jay College, 89-63, in a non-conference men's basketball game on Monday night at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center on “Coach Charlie Brown Court.”

NJCU (11-9), which led by as many as 26 points, shot 59.3 percent in the second half, and tallied the most points since an 89-point total in a win over Farmingdale State College on December 3. John Jay (1-19) dropped its 15th straight game. NJCU leads the all-time series, 13-0.

All 15 players on the roster saw considerable time, with 13 scoring, 13 grabbing a rebound and everyone attempting at least one shot. In all, NJCU had three players in double figures.

For the second straight year, senior guard KYLE INGRAM (Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Township) was NJCU's top scorer against the Bloodhounds and senior guard JOSH LOPEZ (Jersey City, NJ/St. Mary's (Jersey City)) led the way in assists.

Ingram finished with 12 points in 13 minutes, shooting 4-of-6 from the field and 2-of-4 from three-point range. Meanwhile, Lopez delivered a game and team-season high nine assists, while adding
11-24-09 Josh Lopez 2
his 157th career three-pointer.

Freshman small forward WALIK ALBRIGHT (Jersey City, NJ/Create Charter) racked up 11 points (4-8 FG) and two steals in 17 minutes while freshman guard STEVE RAYMOND (Asbury Park, NJ/Asbury Park) provided a career-best 10 points (2-2 FG, 6-7 FT) in seven reserve minutes.

Also for NJCU, freshman power forward TERRENCE DOCTOR (Jersey City, NJ/University Academy) had eight points (2-4 FG, 4-4 FT) and four rebounds in 11 minutes while sophomore center TAQUAN ABDULLAH (Kenilworth, NJ/David Brearley) finished with eight points on 4-of-4 shooting in 12 minutes. Junior power forward TOM McDERMOTT (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) collected seven points (3-4 FG), five rebounds and three steals in a team-high 19 minutes. Junior point guard COREY DIXON (Linden, NJ/David Brearley) also scored seven.

John Jay was led by senior forward Vaughn Mason (Bronx, NY/Alfred E. Smith) with 14 points (4-8 FG, 6-8 FT) and four assists. Senior forward Daniel Desir (Jamaica, NY/Jamaica) and freshman forward Darryl Dennis (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream Central) each registered 12 points for the visitors.

The first 12 minutes was competitive, until NJCU began to pull away. Dennis made a three-pointer for a 15-12 lead with 11:57 remaining before junior guard ANTOINE ROGERS (Trenton, NJ/Ewing) answered 14 seconds later with a trey for the fourth tie of the opening period. NJCU led 21-15 on an Abdullah tip-in before Vaughn cut it to one (21-20, 8:37 left) with a three-point play.

But Albright and Ingram drilled threes for a 29-24 lead and NJCU extended the scoring to 11-3, claiming a 32-24 edge on a McDermott layup. Ingram sank a three for 35-26 and McDermott gave NJCU its first double-digit margin, 37-27, with a layup with 3:46 left in the half. A steal and fast-break slam by junior small forward JOSH CAVER (Trenton, NJ/Fairless Hills (Pennsbury, PA)) with 19 seconds left gave NJCU a 41-30 halftime advantage.

NJCU was never challenged in the second half. Leading 52-42 with 14:49 remaining, the Knights notched 14 of the next 17 points to seize a 66-45 cushion with 11:06 left after Abdullah slammed home a pass from Doctor and Rogers laid home a feed from Caver. NJCU's largest lead was the 26-point final margin. Raymond and sophomore small forward ASAD FAISON (Salisbury, NC/West Rowan (NC)) each had dunks in the final two minutes to accentuate the win. Four different NJCU players had a slam in the win as NJCU's bench outscored the JJC reserves, 52-28.

NJCU is off until Saturday, February 6 at 8 p.m. when it visits Rutgers-Newark at the Golden Dome in Newark, NJ for a New Jersey Athletic Conference North Division tilt. John Jay visits Lehman College in CUNYAC action on February 3 at 5 p.m.
