BOX SCORE
VERO BEACH, FL (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com)...New Jersey City University rallied from a 3-0 deficit with single runs in the fourth, seventh and eighth innings but Oneonta State College scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to break the tie, scoring the eventual winning run on a long sac fly that enabled the runner to score from second base, as the Red Dragons edged NJCU, 5-3, in game four of the Russ Matt Collegiate Invitational played in Dodgertown Stadium.
The win keeps Oneonta unbeaten at 5-0 while NJCU falls to 1-3, losing three straight. It was the first of two meetings this week between the schools who will square off again on March 13.
In a game with no errors for either side, NJCU had five hits, led by junior centerfielder KEN WITTE (Wantage, NJ/High Point Regional), who was 2-for-4. Sophomore second baseman ROB GONZALEZ (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) scored twice, going 1-for-3 with a walk. Junior first baseman JORDAN TETRICK (Delray Beach, FL/Radnor (Pa.)) was 1-for-2 with a run and RBI and two walks.
Sophomore right-hander RANDY PARISH (Rahway, NJ/Central (Brooksville, FL)) struck out six and walked just two in a complete-game, eight-inning effort, allowing five runs and eight hits.
The Red Dragons received a 2-for-3 effort from senior first baseman Dan Randall (Salem, NY) who added two runs and two RBIs on a homerun. Senior third baseman Steve Gauck (Clifton Park, NY) was 2-for-4.
The Red Dragons used five pitchers. Junior left-hander Michael Center (Schenectady, NY) started, tossing 6.1 innings. He allowed two runs and two hits, walking six and striking out three, leaving with a 3-2 lead before moving to right field. Sophomore righty William Rivas (Babylon, NY) who gave up the tying run in the top of the eighth, ended up with the win while junior righty Anthony Bates (Utica, NY) closed the game for his second save.
Oneonta took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Randall hit a two-run homerun to left. NJCU got one run back in the fourth when Gonzalez led off with a walk, stole second, move to third on a single by Witte with no outs, and scored on a double play. NJCU tied it in the seventh. Tetrick drew a leadoff walk before scoring on a sac fly by freshman third baseman BRIAN BUSTILLO (Jersey City, NJ/Hudson Catholic).
The Red Dragons regained a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out RBI double by freshman catcher Bryan Marotta (Clifton Park, NY). NJCU tied it again in the eighth. Gonzalez led off with a single before scoring on an RBI single by Tetrick.
In the bottom of the eighth, Oneonta scored twice to win. Senior centerfielder Carmine Caputo (Mahopac, NY) walked and moved to second on a sacrifice, and Randall walked intentionally, giving Oneonta runners on first and second. Center drove a ball to deep center forcing Witte a long distance to make the catch, before falling backwards and raising his arm to show the umpires he caught the ball. Caputo never stopped running, scoring from second on what became a sacrifice fly. Gauck then drove in Randall from third base with a two-out single for a 5-3 lead and Bates retired NJCU in order in the top of the ninth, struck out the first two batters.
NJCU plays Mount Aloysius College in a doubleheader on March 10, beginning at 12:30 p.m.
