O’BEIRNE WINS TWICE, PERRUCCI BELTS GRAND SLAM AS NJCU SWEEPS DAY TWO OF SPRING TRIP WITH VICTORIES OVER SAINT MARY’S, ST. JOSEPH’S

- Tara Perrucci unleashed the 11th known grand slam in program history as NJCU scored five times in the opening inning against Saint Mary's and eventually won twice.

Freshman pitcher ASHLEY O'BEIRNE (Wood-ridge, NJ/Immaculate Conception) earned two wins—one in relief—to improve to 3-0 to start her collegiate career and senior pitcher/leftfielder TARA PERRUCCI (Wallington, NJ/Wallington) belted the 11th recorded grand slam in New Jersey City University history as the Gothic Knights won a pair of games at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on March 9, defeating Saint Mary's College (Indiana), 8-5 in the opener, and St. Joseph's College (Maine), 5-2 in the nightcap.
 
NJCU, which trailed 2-0 heading to the bottom of the sixth inning of game two, scored five times in the inning for the win. The Knights improved to 3-1 to open the trip. It's NJCU's best four-game start to a season since also going 3-1 in 2004.
 
Perrucci, whose only other career homerun came in 2008, was a combined 3-for-7 with six RBIs in the two games. Junior second baseman DANIELLE DELFINO (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep)'s combined for a 3-for-5, two-run effort which included three stolen bases against SJCME. Freshman third baseman REBECCA SATZ (Morris Plains, NJ/Morristown) was 3-for-7 with three runs in the two games.
 
O'Beirne tossed a combined 9.1 innings between the two games, allowing five earned runs and 11 hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
