BROOKLYN, NY (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com)...Freshman outside hitter JOSE MATTA (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Union Hill) and sophomore outside hitter KENNY LISK (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) combined for 24 kills and that proved to be more than enough offense as New Jersey City University limited Brooklyn College to only 22 kills and the Gothic Knights swept a non-conference match from the Bulldogs, 3-0 (30-15, 30-19, 30-22), on Monday night at the West Quad Gymnasium.
NJCU wins for the fifth time in its last six outings to improve to 13-7 overall while Brooklyn falls for the sixth time in seven matches and it 3-15. NJCU owns a perfect 19-0 record all-time against Brooklyn. It was NJCU's second win over Brooklyn this year; the Knights won 3-1 (30-13, 30-13, 25-30, 30-10) in Jersey City on January 28.
Matta, the reigning North East Collegiate Volleyball Association Metro Division Rookie of the Week, continues to spark the Knights, slamming a match-best 14 kills and a .440 hitting percentage (14-3-25) with seven digs, reaching double figures in kills for the fourth straight match and the ninth time this year.
Meanwhile, Lisk continued to attack on a highly accurate rate from the outside, collecting 10 kills with just one error over 18 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage, adding six digs. In his last three matches, Lisk is hitting .407 with 28 kills and only four errors on 59 attacks.
Junior setter JORGE RODRIGUEZ (Havana, Cuba/Memorial) had 17 assists, six digs and three service aces while senior setter FELIPE SIQUEIRA (Newark, NJ/Science) dished 16 assists. Sophomore opposite AUSTIN BRYANT (Virginia Beach, VA/Kempsville) played just one set, yet hit .500 with five kills (5-1-8).
Also for NJCU, junior libero WILTON JIMENEZ (Passaic, NJ/Passaic) had a team-best nine digs and freshman middle blocker DAVIS OBI (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) stuffed three blocks and landed five kills (5-1-16, .250).
For the Bulldogs, freshman setter Guillermo Melosevich (Belleville, NJ) had 19 assists. Sophomore outside hitter David Choy (Brooklyn, NY) led Brooklyn with seven kills. Senior libero Auston Sumitro (Wappingers Falls, NY) had a match-high 14 digs.
NJCU hit .379 with 16 kills (16-5-29) in the opening set. Leading 12-10, NJCU scored 11 consecutive points for a 23-10 advantage and cruised to victory. Bryant and Matta each had three kills during the spurt.
NJCU never trailed in the second set, hitting .314 as a team (13-2-35). The Knights jumped out to a 24-9 lead before posting another easy win.
In the final set, Brooklyn led 15-14 before NJCU scored nine consecutive points for a 23-15 margin. Matta had four kills over a stretch of five points to jumpstart the spurt, before the Knights closed the match, winning the set 30-22.
NJCU will return to action when it hosts SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday, March 17 at 7 p.m. at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center on “Coach Charlie Brown Court”.
