READING, PA (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com)...Alvernia University scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 5-5 deadlock after New Jersey City University had gained a one-run advantage, scoring four times in the sixth, as the Crusaders outlasted NJCU, 8-5, in non-conference action on Wednesday at Angelica Park.
With the win, Alvernia improves to 9-2 with its seventh consecutive victory, and has claimed all three games against NJCU (3-5) in the last two seasons. It was the first game of the northern portion of NJCU's 2010 schedule. The Gothic Knights left 12 runners on base, stranding the bases loaded in the sixth and seventh innings, and two men in the fourth and eighth.
In defeat, NJCU compiled 11 hits and four players had two hits apiece, led by sophomore catcher FRANCISCO RAMIREZ (Jersey City, NJ/Hudson Catholic), who was 2-for-5 with two runs, two doubles and one RBI. Senior designated hitter ALEX MENA (North Bergen, NJ/Hudson Catholic) and junior right fielder JORGE GUTIERREZ (Sewaren, NJ/Hudson Catholic) each were 2-for-5 with a run; Gutierrez had one RBI. Junior shortstop MICHAEL FIORENTINO (Point Pleasant Beach, NJ/Point Pleasant Beach) added a 2-for-5, one RBI effort.
