BOX SCORE
STATEN ISLAND, NY (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com)...Sophomore catcher FRANCISCO RAMIREZ (Jersey City, NJ/Hudson Catholic) broke another single-game school record with four doubles, finishing 4-for-5 with five RBIs and three runs, and senior designated hitter ALEX MENA (North Bergen, NJ/Hudson Catholic) became the 30th player in the 63-year history of the New Jersey City University baseball program to register 100 career hits as the Gothic Knights pounded out 24 hits, including a single-game team school record 11 doubles, and romped past the College of Staten Island, 15-2, on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference game.
NJCU's 11 doubles are tied for the fifth most in NCAA Division III history and the most by any school since May 9, 2005. The NCAA record for doubles is 12, accomplished four times. NJCU joins three other schools that have registered 11 doubles in one game. The 11 doubles are also a New Jersey Athletic Conference record.
NJCU wins its third straight game, improving to 6-7, and has scored 31 runs in its last 16 innings. CSI falls to 6-5 with the loss. NJCU has won the last six meetings with Staten Island in the Bayonne Bridge Series since 2008.
The Knights jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead, scoring four in the first inning and five in the second, with single runs in the third and sixth innings before capping the offensive outburst with four runs in the seventh. NJCU used 18 players in the game, and neither school committed an error. The 24 hits were the most by the Knights since April 20, 2004, when NJCU collected 26 hits against Baruch College.
Three NJCU pitchers limited the Dolphins to eight hits. Junior right-hander JEFF KARCZEWSKI (Hamilton, NJ/Hamilton West) improved to 2-0 on the mound. In 7.0 innings, he allowed just two runs and five hits, struck out six and walked three.
Eight Gothic Knights tallied multiple hits, led by Ramirez, who in his last outing on March 21 set another school record with two homeruns in the same inning. Ramirez is now hitting .444 through 12 games (16-36) and 11 of his 16 hits have gone for extra bases.
Mena, a two-year team captain, joined the exclusive 100-hit club in just his 105th career game and 92nd start, going 2-for-6 with three RBIs.
Junior left fielder KEN WITTE (Wantage, NJ/High Point Regional) had another standout effort, going 4-for-5 with three runs, two RBIs and a double and junior third baseman MICHAEL FIORENTINO (Point Pleasant Beach, NJ/Point Pleasant Beach) added a 3-for-4 showing with four runs, a walk and RBI.
Also, for NJCU, senior center fielder EDDIE GONZOLO (Union City, NJ/Union Hill) was 3-for-5 with two runs. Junior first baseman JORDAN TETRICK (Delray Beach, FL/Radnor (Pa.)) was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Sophomore second baseman ROB GONZALEZ (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) scored twice, batting 2-for-4. Junior right fielder JORGE GUTIERREZ (Sewaren, NJ/Hudson Catholic) was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.
On the mound, freshman righty JOSUE REYES (Plainfield, NJ/Plainfield) tossed a solid eighth inning of relief, allowing one hit, with one strikeout. Freshman righty ALVIN CARRASCO (Jersey City, NJ/St. Mary's (Jersey City)) closed the game in the ninth inning. He allowed two hits, but fanned two batters to conclude the game.
CSI tallied eight hits. Junior first baseman Pat Gale (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) was the lone player with multiple hits, going 2-for-4. CSI used five pitchers. Junior James Mardikos (Staten Island, NY/Petrides) took the loss (0-2), allowing nine earned runs and eight hits with three strikeouts and two walks in 1.1 innings.
NJCU got on the board before a single out was recorded in the first inning. Gonzalez and Witte singled and Fiorentino walked to load the bases before Tetrick had a two-run single. Ramirez then doubled to center, driving in two more runs as Fiorentino and Tetrick crossed the plate for a 4-0 lead with no outs.
NJCU added more to the scoreboard in the second inning. Fiorentino had an RBI single for a 5-0 lead. Ramirez slapped a double down the left field line for two RBIs before Mena doubled to right field. His 99th career hit drove in two RBIs, and made it 9-0. In the third, Gonzalo doubled and Witte followed with a one-out double for a 10-0 margin.
CSI scored both of its runs in the fifth. In the sixth inning, Ramirez notched his third double in the sixth inning, before Gutierrez brought him home for NJCU's 11th run.
The Knights added four in the seventh inning. Gonzalez led off with a double and scored on an RBI single by Witte. Ramirez ripped his fourth double of the game—one shy of the Division III single-game individual record—down the left field line to score Witte. With one out, Mena deposited his 100th career hit as a single into left center, scoring Fiorentino, who had reached with an infield hit. Gutierrez racked up NJCU's third double of the frame and accounted for NJCU's 15th run.
NJCU is back in action on Saturday, March 27 at 12 p.m. when it hosts Utica College in a non-conference doubleheader at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex.
