JERSEY CITY, NJ (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com)...New Jersey City University posted sweeps of both Yeshiva University (30-12, 30-17, 30-16) and The Sage Colleges (30-19, 30-16, 30-24) to reach double figures in victories for the 19th consecutive season as the Gothic Knights hosted a North East Collegiate Volleyball Association Metro Division tri-match on Sunday on “Coach Charlie Brown Court” at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center.
With the wins, NJCU improves to 10-6 overall and 2-3 in the Metro Division. NJCU improves to 21-0 all-time against Yeshiva and all results have been 3-0 sweeps. NJCU and Sage were meeting for the first time. In the middle match, Yeshiva defeated Sage, 3-1 (30-22, 28-30, 30-25, 30-25). Yeshiva, which went 1-1 on the day, is 10-9 overall and 1-5 in the NECVA Metro. Sage drops to 5-17 (0-7 NECVA Metro).
NJCU sophomore opposite AUSTIN BRYANT (Virginia Beach, VA/Kempsville) had a combined 24 kills (24-6-41) and .439 hitting percentage in six sets, as he reached double figures in kills for the 11th and 12th consecutive matches and 13th time in 15 matches this season.
**********MATCH 1: NEW JERSEY CITY 3, YESHIVA 0 (30-12, 30-17, 30-16) **********
NJCU hit a collective .459 overall with 42 kills and only eight errors in 74 attempts as a team, including a staggering .762 hitting percentage in the opening set on 16 kills and no errors (21 attempt) to remain perfect all-time against the Maccabees.
Sophomore outside hitter KENNY LISK (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) led NJCU with a season-high 15 kills while hitting .619 (15-2-21. Bryant registered a .500 hitting rate with 10 kills (10-2-16) and four blocks. Freshman middle blocker CASEY BLAKE (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) rejected 10 blocks (two solo).
Senior setter FELIPE SIQUEIRA (Newark, NJ/Science) dished 27 assists and added three blocks. Junior opposite AJ SAFAVI (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) uncorked five of NJCU's 10 aces, adding seven digs and four kills with a .375 percentage (4-1-8). Freshman outside hitter JOSE MATTA (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Union Hill) collected four kills and hit .667. Junior libero CHRIS EDRA (Edison, NJ/JP Stevens) defended seven digs.
For Yeshiva, senior setter Joseph Bajtner (Skokie, IL/Ida Crown Jewish Academy) had 16 assists. Junior middle blocker Raphael Herskovits (Hamilton, Ontario, Canada/Yeshivat Or Chaim) had six kills but Yeshiva hit -.147 as a team (16-27-75).
**********MATCH 2: YESHIVA 3, SAGE 1 (30-22, 28-30, 30-25, 30-25) **********
Senior outside hitter David Kahana (Silver Spring, MD/MJBHA), who did not play against NJCU, had a huge double-double of 20 kills (20-8-51, .235) and 20 digs, with four blocks and Herskovits hit .458 with 13 kills (13-2-24) and six blocks as the Maccabees earned their first Metro Division win of the season and avenged a 3-2 loss at Sage on February 21. Yeshiva hit .208 as a team with 59 kills (59-26-159) and had 14.0 blocks. Bajtner delivered 55 assists, nine digs and two blocks.
Senior outside hitter Zanvy Grauman (Silver Spring, MD/MJBHA) added 13 kills and seven blocks (two solo) while freshman middle blocker Naftali Rosenthal (Overland Park, KS/HBHA) collected 10 kills and six digs. Junior opposite Jack Voystock (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Township) collected 10 digs.
Sage received 21 digs, 18 kills and five service aces from freshman outside hitter Kyle Ray (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) while freshman middle hitter Jed Kubisch (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) finished with 19 kills and 13 digs. Freshman setter Anthony Gerace (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) dished 46 assists and had 10 digs. Freshman middle hitter Ryan Couch (Nyskayuna, NY/Colonie) added 10 kills.
After a competitive second set which featured nine ties, three lead changes and a combined 31 kills, Yeshiva gained control of the match by surging out to a 20-6 lead in the third set. The Maccabees clinched the match with 17 kills and a team percentage of .314 in the final set.
**********MATCH 3: NEW JERSEY CITY 3, SAGE 0 (30-19, 30-16, 30-24) **********
Bryant led all players with 14 kills and a .400 attack rate (14-4-25), adding three blocks and two aces. Freshman outside hitter MICHAL KUCZA (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) chalked up eight kills and only one error for a .438 percentage, while adding nine digs. NJCU hit .372 as a team with 44 winners.
Siqueira had four blocks and he and junior setter JORGE RODRIGUEZ (Havana, Cuba/Memorial) each provided 19 assists. Rodriguez manufactured his 19 helpers on 38 attempts for a .500 distribution rate.
Also for NJCU, freshman middle blocker DAVIS OBI (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) downed five kills in six attempts for a .667 percentage and rejected five blocks. Blake added a .455 percentage and five kills (5-0-11) and three blocks. Edra covered 11 digs and Matta hit .800 (4-0-5) in one set. Safavi landed four aces, finishing the afternoon with nine.
For the Gators, Ray finished with 10 kills while Kubisch chipped in nine and Couch landed eight more. Gerace dished 24 assists.
NJCU opened a 22-10 lead in the opening set before winning by 11 while posting 18 kills (.364 percentage). The Knights against unleashed a huge 22-10 advantage in the second set. There were 12 ties and four lead changes in the final set. NJCU fell behind 20-16 before scoring 14 of the final 18 points to solidify its second sweep of the day.
NJCU is back in action on Tuesday, March 9 at 7 p.m. when it hosts Bard College in an NECVA Metro match. Yeshiva meets Polytechnic Institute of NYU that evening at 8 p.m. Sage is off until March 16 when it travels to #13 SUNY New Paltz.
