built an 8-3 lead after five innings before Lehman College rallied, scoring eight of the game's final nine runs, including five in the bottom of the eighth, as the Lightning stole an 11-9 non-conference win out from under the Gothic Knights on Tuesday on Lehman's South Field.
NJCU (10-15), which had defeated Lehman (7-14) by a 14-5 margin on April 6 in Jersey City, left 10 men on base while the Lightning stranded 11. NJCU committed three double plays in the setback.
In defeat, sophomore second baseman ROB GONZALEZ (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) was 3-for-6 with three RBIs, three runs, two steals and a triple while junior center fielder KEN WITTE (Wantage, NJ/High Point Regional) went 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs.
Sophomore designated hitter FRANCISCO RAMIREZ (Jersey City, NJ/Hudson Catholic) provided two RBIs, doing 2-for-3. Junior first baseman JORDAN TETRICK (Delray Beach, FL/Radnor (Pa.) was 3-for-5 with a run. Junior TOM BURKE (Edison, NJ/Immaculata) started at shortstop where he scored twice, before finishing the game on the mound.
Sophomore shortstop/pitcher Jhon Comas Disla (Bronx, NY) led the Lightning with four RBIs, batting 3-for-4 with two runs and senior designated hitter Amadoernesto Guzman (Bronx, NY) was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Junior right fielder Bobby Villante (East Elmhurst, NY) went 2-for-4 with two runs. Freshman third baseman Miguel Sanchez (Bronx, NY) contributed two hits. Senior second baseman Angel Ramos (Bronx, NY) and junior center fielder Jeremy Lopez (Bronx, NY) each scored twice.
In relief, senior Alberto Alicea (Bronx, NY) earned the win. In 3.0 innings in the sixth, seventh and eighth frames, he allowed just one run and three hits, striking out two and walking one to pick up his second win (2-0). Comas Disla pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for the save. Senior William Rivera (Bronx, NY) took a no-decision in a starting role, allowing eight runs (four earned) and nine hits with two walks and no strikeouts in 5.0 innings.
Freshman right-hander ALVIN CARRASCO (Jersey City, NJ/St. Mary's (Jersey City) started for NJCU and left in the lead. He allowed five earned runs and eight hits with four walks and two K's in 6.0 innings. Sophomore righty RANDY PARISH (Rahway, NJ/Central (Brooksville, FL)) took the loss (0-4). In 1.1 innings, he allowed four earned runs (five total), three hits, two walks and struck out one. Burke faced five batters, allowing just two hits, but all three runners he inherited scored.
Both teams scored in the first inning before NJCU batted around in the second, scoring five times for a 6-1 edge. Tetrick led off with a double and scored on a groundball by Burke. NJCU loaded the bases for Gonzalez who deposited a three-run triple into right center, before he scored on a Ramirez double.
Lehman got one back in the third on an RBI single by Comas Disla and cut the lead in half (6-3) in the fourth when Villante doubled with two outs and scored on an error. NJCU tacked on two more in the fifth inning. Burke singled, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a sac fly by sophomore left fielder CHRISTOPHER MIRABILE (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan). Gonzalez followed with a single, stole second, and scored on an RBI double by Witte.
Lehman scored three in the bottom of the sixth to make it closer. Comas Disla doubled home two runs before crossing himself on an RBI single by Guzman as the Lightning trimmed the lead to 8-6. Witte led off the eighth with a double and scored NJCU's ninth run on a Ramirez single.
But Lehman manufactured five runs on five hits as 11 batters came to the plate in the eighth, aided by two NJCU errors. Comas Disla and Guzman each had RBI singles as the lead dwindled to 9-8. After Burke relieved Parish, junior left fielder Raul Cordero (New York, NY) tied the game with a single to center scoring Comas Disla. Lehman moved ahead 10-9 on an infield RBI single by Sanchez, which scored senior Arturo Lazaro, Jr. (Bronx, NY) before the hosts added an insurance run on an error.
Burke led off the ninth with a walk for NJCU before Comas Disla retired the final three batters to save it for the Lightning.
NJCU is back on the diamond on Thursday, April 15 at 3:30 p.m. at Riverfront Stadium in Newark, NJ against Rutgers-Newark.
