NEWARK, NJ (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com)...New Jersey City University outhit rival Rutgers-Newark, 13-9 as junior designated hitter MICHAEL FIORENTINO (Point Pleasant Beach, NJ/Point Pleasant Beach) and sophomore catcher FRANCISCO RAMIREZ (Jersey City, NJ/Hudson Catholic) each went 3-for-4, but the Scarlet Raiders scored three times in the first and sixth innings and held off the Gothic Knights, 7-3, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
The loss drops NJCU to 10-16 overall (1-8 NJAC) while Newark (13-14, 4-3 NJAC) won its fifth consecutive game. The Raiders only left four men on base.
Fiorentino and Ramirez each had a double and one RBI and Fiorentino added a run to lead the NJCU charge. Sophomore second baseman ROB GONZALEZ (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) went 2-for-5 with one run and picked up his 15th stolen base of the season. Senior left fielder EDDIE GONZALO (Union City, NJ/Union Hill) added a 2-for-4 effort with an RBI.
The Raiders received a solid 8.0 innings from junior right-hander Ryan Williams (Kearny, NJ/Kearny), who allowed 12 hits—nine were singles—and just three earned runs. He struck out three without a walk over 107 pitches for his first win (1-4).
Offensively for the hosts, senior third baseman Joe Furnaguera (Springfield, NJ/Jonathan Dayton) paced the Scarlet Raiders by going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs—both coming on a two-run double which capped a three-run first inning.
Freshman centerfielder Owen Harshaney (Dunellen, NJ/Dunellen) tallied his first career homerun, a fifth-inning solo shot, which made it 4-2. He scored two runs, going 1-for-2. Newark junior right fielder Michael Cassese (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) lofted his seventh homerun of the season over the right field wall in the sixth for the final three runs. He finished 1-for-4 with a run and three RBIs.
Junior shortstop Patrick Reitemeyer (Kearny, NJ/St. Mary's-Rutherford) was 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run and RBI.
Sophomore righty THOMAS VERMAZEN (San Diego, CA/Point Loma) had a better outing, allowing just eight hits in 7.0 innings, but five were for extra bases. He struck out five, walked two, and allowed six earned runs in the loss (0-5). Freshman righty WENDELL RODRIGUEZ (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep) had a strikeout and just one hit against in one inning.
Freshman righty Matt Larangera (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) hurled a scoreless ninth inning for the hosts, allowing a walk and hit with one K.
NJCU struck first in the opening inning, scoring twice. Gonzalez led off with a single and scored when Fiorentino delivered a one-out RBI double to left centerfield before scoring on a single by Ramirez. Newark claimed a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double by Reitemeyer¸ scoring Harshaney who was hit by a pitch and stole second. An error allowed another runner to reach and Furnaguera made it 3-2 with a two-run double down the left field line.
NJCU's final run was plated in the seventh inning. Freshman third baseman BRIAN BUSTILLO (Jersey City, NJ/Hudson Catholic) doubled with two outs and scored on a Gonzalo single.
NJCU, which defeated William Paterson University on April 9, 7-6, will look to sweep that season series when it faces the Pioneers in an NJAC game on April 16 in Wayne, NJ.
