Ramapo College freshman right-hander John McNeil (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) lost a no-hitter with one out in the seventh inning, and was backed up by an offense that compiled 18 hits—16 of which were singles—and scored five times in the first inning as the Roadrunners defeated New Jersey City University, 13-2, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference baseball game on Friday at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex.

After winning five straight, NJCU (8-9, 0-2 NJAC) dropped its second straight league game. Ramapo moved above .500 (7-6, 1-1 NJAC), defeating the Knights for the fourth straight meeting. The Roadrunners used 20 players and 12 had at least one hit. NJCU's two runs equaled a season low for offensive output.

McNeil (2-1) threw 99 pitches in 7.0 innings of work, allowing two singles and no runs, while fanning seven and walking two. He retired NJCU in order in four of the first five innings before senior catcher ALEX MENA (North Bergen, NJ/Hudson Catholic) broke up the no-hit bid with a scorching single down the left field line with one out in the seventh.

Four RCNJ players had multiple hits, led by sophomore first baseman Dan Moreno (Cranford, NJ/Cranford), who was 3-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs. Junior outfielder Nicholas DiGirolamo (Dumont, NJ/Dumont) was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and freshman outfielder Michael Hansford (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) contributed two runs in a 2-for-4 showing.

Also for the visitors, sophomore right fielder Daniel Mauriello (Monroe, NY/Monroe Woodbury) and junior catcher Michael McGuckin (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) were each 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Senior third baseman Joey Cacchiola (Union, NJ/Union) walked three times and scored twice and junior second baseman Mark Ruggiero (Fairfield, NJ/West Essex) was 2-for-3.

For NJCU, sophomore designated hitter FRANCISCO RAMIREZ (Jersey City, NJ/Hudson Catholic) was 1-for-4 with a two-RBI single in the eighth inning that broke up Ramapo's shutout bid and extended his hitting streak to 10 games. He has 12 RBIs in his last five contests.

No NJCU player had multiple hits, but junior left fielder KEN WITTE (Wantage, NJ/High Point Regional), this week's NJAC and ECAC Division III Metro Player of the Week, tallied his sixth double of the year. Junior third baseman MICHAEL FIORENTINO (Point Pleasant Beach, NJ/Point Pleasant Beach) extended his remarkable streak as the most difficult player in Division III to strikeout. Fiorentino was 1-for-3 with a run scored. In 73 plate appearances and 58 at bats this season, Fiorentino, who ranks #1 in the country in fewest strikeouts, has not struck out. It is believed to be a school record.

Sophomore righty THOMAS VERMAZEN (San Diego, CA/Point Loma) took the loss (0-3), allowing seven runs and eight hits, with three strikeouts and five walks in 3.0 innings. NJCU utilized five pitchers. In relief, freshman righty MICHAEL KELLY (Jersey City, NJ/Hudson Catholic) allowed just one hit and one walk in 1.2 innings of work and freshman righty JOSUE REYES (Plainfield, NJ/Plainfield) struck out two and allowed one hit in one inning.

Ramapo used three pitchers and junior righty John Guagliardo (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea) struck out two and allowed one hit in one relief inning.

Ramapo scored all the runs it would need in the first inning, notching five runs on six hits as 11 batters came to the plate. The Roadrunners added two in the fourth, four in the sixth and two in the ninth.

NJCU is back in action on Saturday, April 3 at 11:30 a.m. when it visits #9 ranked Kean University for an NJAC doubleheader in Union, NJ. Ramapo hosts The College of New Jersey in an NJAC doubleheader at the same time.
