BOX SCORES: GAME 1 | GAME 2
LITTLE FALLS, NJ (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com)...New Jersey City University held leads in both games of a doubleheader at Montclair State University, but the Red Hawks scored nine unanswered runs to claim the opener, 9-1 in six innings, and scored the final 13 runs in game two for a 13-2, five-inning decision, as MSU swept a New Jersey Athletic Conference twinbill from the Gothic Knights on Tuesday at the MSU Softball Stadium.
Montclair improves to 20-14 and 8-8 in the NJAC and with 16 points remains in position for one of the final berths into the six-team NJAC Tournament. NJCU (14-22, 1-15NJAC) drops its eighth straight. MSU leads the all-time series, 24-2.
For NJCU, freshman third baseman REBECCA SATZ (Morris Plains, NJ/Morristown)—a two-time NJAC Rookie Hitter of the Week—drove in all three runs scored on the day, giving her a team season-best 29 RBIs.
MSU senior rightfielder Kelly Nance (Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro) was a combined 5-for-8 with four homeruns, nine RBIs and five runs in the two games, and uncorked a grand slam in game two. Junior centerfielder Leslie Gonzalez (West New York, NJ/North Bergen) was a combined 6-for-7 with four RBIs.
******GAME 1: MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY 9, NEW JERSEY CITY UNIVERSITY 1 (6 innings)******
In game one, sophomore shortstop MEGAN GINTER (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) and junior catcher/first baseman TAYLOR LANG (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) each went 2-for-3 with Ginter scoring NJCU's lone run. Satz went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Nance was 3-for-4 with three runs, three RBIs, two homeruns and one double. Gonzalez batted 4-for-4 with two RBIs. Sophomore shortstop Shannon Mozek (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI while freshman third baseman Heather Bergman (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Gov. Livingston) hit 2-for-2 with a run and RBI. Freshman first baseman Kelli O'Brien (Edison, NJ/Edison) finished 1-for-1 with two runs and one RBI.
MSU freshman right-hander Jaime Miller (Spotswood, NJ/St. John Vianney) fired six strikeouts over 6.0 innings for the win (9-6), allowing one run, nine hits and one walk. Senior left fielder and right-handed pitcher TARA PERRUCCI (East Rutherford, NJ/Wallington) took the loss (6-10), allowing nine runs and 14 hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
Ginter singled to lead off the first inning, advanced on a groundout, stole third and scored on an RBI single by Satz as the Knights gained a 1-0 lead.
But MSU scored three times in the bottom of the first to take charge, before adding one run in the second, four in the fifth and one run in the sixth. Senior second baseman Megan Durkin (West Orange, NJ/West Orange) had an RBI single in the first to tie it before Nance homered, driving in two for a 3-1 lead. Gonzalez had an RBI single in the second inning for a 4-1 margin. In the fifth, O'Brien, Bergman, Gonzalez and Mozek each had RBI singles in the five-hit inning. Nance's solo homerun as the first batter in the sixth inning was enough to enforce the eight-run rule.
******GAME 2: MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY 13, NEW JERSEY CITY UNIVERSITY 2 (5 innings)******
In game two, NJCU grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning before MSU gained a 3-2 margin in the second inning and tacked on four runs in the fourth and six more in the fifth behind the play of Nance, who was 2-for-4 with six RBIs, two runs, and two homers. MSU outhit NJCU, 10-4, and took advantage of seven walks and four NJCU errors.
In defeat, Satz was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and her 10th double of the season. Ginter went 2-for-2 with three stolen bases and one run. Junior center fielder STEPHANIE GOMEZ (South Plainfield, NJ/Belleville) was 1-for-3 with a run.
For MSU, Durkin complimented Nance's effort with three RBIs, batting 2-for-3 with two runs. Gonzalez was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. O'Brien and sophomore shortstop Priscilla Camacho (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep) each scored twice.
Senior righty Elia Persico (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) was the winner (11-7), tossing a four-hitter. She allowed two runs and two walks, striking out four. NJCU rookie righty ASHLEY O'BEIRNE (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Immaculate Conception) took the loss (8-11), allowing nine earned runs and 10 hits.
In the first inning, NJCU again gained an early advantage as Ginter singled and stole second. Gomez singled and Satz ripped a two-run double for a 2-0 lead. However, NJCU, which fell to 5-12 since two-time All-NJAC junior second baseman DANIELLE DELFINO (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep) suffered a season-ending injury on April 8, didn't collect another hit until the fifth inning.
MSU claimed a 3-2 lead in the third. After a run scored on a bases-loaded walk, a two-run single by Gonzalez gave the hosts the 3-2 lead. In the fourth inning, Durkin had a two-RBI double and Nance later added her third homerun of the day, driving in two more. In the fifth inning, Camacho and Durkin each had RBI singles. With one out, Nance's fourth homerun of the game and of the season came with the bases loaded, and that grand slam increased the cushion to 13-2, as MSU swept the doubleheader.
NJCU returns to action on Thursday, April 29 at 3 p.m. in non-conference road action against the College of Staten Island.
