The Profs were led by senior rightfielder Jordan Marsch (Brick, NJ/Brick Township), who was a combined 6-for-8 with seven RBIs, four runs and two homeruns in the doubleheader, including six RBIs in game two. Junior centerfielder Matt Citro (Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) had three hits in each game in the leadoff spot, finishing 6-for-11 with three runs.
******GAME 1: ROWAN UNIVERSITY 14 NEW JERSEY CITY UNIVERSITY 9******
In the opener NJCU struck first before the Profs evened it at 1-1 in the third and added three in the fourth for a 4-1 margin. NJCU made it 4-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Rowan increased its lead to 5-3 before NJCU collected three fifth-inning runs to regain a 6-5 advantage. But Rowan, which scored a run in five consecutive innings and strung together four multi-run frames, registered four runs in the top of the sixth for a 9-6 margin it wouldn't relinquish. The Knights scored two in the sixth to cut the deficit to 9-8 before the Profs, which recorded nine runs off the NJCU bullpen, tacked on two runs in the seventh and three in the ninth for a 14-8 cushion; NJCU added one run in the ninth.
Rowan was led by sophomore catcher Nick Turano (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) with three RBIs and two runs in a 3-for-5 effort. Rowan, which outhit NJCU, 18-13, had six players with multiple hits, including Citro who was 3-for-6 with two runs and a double and Marsch, who added his third homerun of the season while batting 3-for-4 with two runs and two walks.
Also for Rowan, senior first baseman Matt Johanson (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) was 2-for-5 with two RBIs, two doubles and one run. Junior leftfielder Scott Weaver (Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) hit his fifth homerun of the year and scored twice in a 2-for-5 effort while senior second baseman Dave Lenig (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Memorial) was 2-for-6 and junior designated hitter Kevin O'Brien (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Memorial) scored three times.
For NJCU, junior shortstop TOM BURKE (Edison, NJ/Immaculata) led the way with three RBIs and one run in a 2-for-4 performance with his 11th double of the season. Gutierrez was 3-for-5 with a run and RBI and sophomore catcher FRANCISCO RAMIREZ (Jersey City, NJ/Hudson Catholic) was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and one run. Mena, the designated hitter in the opening game was 1-for-3 with two runs. Junior third baseman MICHAEL FIORENTINO (Point Pleasant Beach, NJ/Point Pleasant Beach) was 2-for-3.
Junior right-hander Mike Swietanski (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) improved to 3-0 for Rowan. In 5.2 innings, he allowed eight runs (six earned) and 12 hits with three strikeouts and two walks over 93 pitches. Junior righty Ryan Peterson (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) earned his third save of the year by tossing 3.1 innings of one-hit ball, allowing one walk against three strikeouts and one walk on 45 pitches.
For NJCU, junior righty JEFF KARCZEWSKI (Hamilton, NJ/Hamilton West) suffered only his second loss, finishing the year 4-2. In 5.0 innings, he allowed five earned runs and nine hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Burke was the fourth reliever used by NJCU and pitched a perfect ninth inning.
NJCU gained a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Gutierrez singled and junior centerfielder KEN WITTE (Wantage, NJ/High Point Regional) and Fiorentino walked with one out. An RBI single by Ramirez scored Gutierrez but Witte was thrown out at the plate. Rowan tied it in the third on an RBI single by Lenig.
Rowan scored three in the fourth inning—all with two outs and two after an error. Marsch homered to left field to make it 2-1. O' Brien was hit by a pitch and Johanson doubled. A ground ball would have ended the inning but was booted allowing one run to score before Citro was hit by a pitch with the based loaded for a third run. Karczewski caught Lenig looking with the bases loaded to get out of the jam. Rowan stranded 14 runners on base in the game.
In the bottom of the fourth, NJCU trimmed the deficit to 4-3. With two outs, Gonzalez' infield single scored Mena who was hit by a pitch, and Gutierrez added an RBI single. Rowan's took a 5-3 lead when Weaver belted the first pitch of the fifth inning over the left field wall. Rowan loaded the bases before Karczewski once again got out of trouble, this time with a fly out.
NJCU responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 6-5 margin. After singles by Fiorentino and Mena, Burke drilled a double to right center to tie the game before scoring on the same play when the relay throw sailed over the backstop.
But Rowan tallied four runs in the sixth to take the lead for good. Turano had a two-run single for a 7-6 lead. O'Brien had a run-producing groundout and Johanson later doubled for a 9-6 lead. Witte and Ramirez had RBI singles in the sixth to cut the gap to 9-8 but NJCU committed two seventh inning errors. Citro doubled, advanced to third on a passed ball before coming home on a throwing error. Turano added an RBI single. Rowan tacked on three runs in the ninth. NJCU's ninth inning run was an RBI single by Burke.
******GAME 2: ROWAN UNIVERSITY 7 NEW JERSEY CITY UNIVERSITY 3******
In game two, Rowan scored three times in the first inning and added three more in the eighth on a three-run Marsch round-tripper for a 7-1 advantage and despite two eighth inning runs, the Knights, outhit 10-8, fell by four runs.
Marsch single-handedly propelled the Profs with six RBIs, going 3-for-4 with two runs, two doubles and his fourth homer of the year. Citro was 3-for-5 with one run and sophomore second baseman Brandon Winkler (Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) scored twice, going 2-for-4. Weaver added two runs.
For NJCU, Gonzalez and Gutierrez each went 2-for-4 with one run. Burke slammed his second homerun of the year and Mena also produced an RBI.
Junior left-hander Michael Cox (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) won for Rowan (4-1). In 5.2 innings he allowed one run against six hits, with four strikeouts and three walks. Rowan used three relievers; sophomore lefty Curtis Arsi (Washington Township, NJ/Westwood) had one strikeout in a perfect two thirds of an inning and junior righty John O'Hara (Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) threw the ninth, allowing one hit.
NJCU used three pitchers. Once again, sophomore righty THOMAS VERMAZEN (San Diego, CA/Point Loma) pitched well enough to win in a starting role, but took the loss (0-7). He allowed only four runs and eight hits in seven innings with two strikeouts and a walk. Rookie lefty PEDRO GARCIA (North Bergen, NJ/St. Joseph of the Palisades) struck out one batter in a perfect ninth inning.
Rowan gained its 3-0 first-inning lead as Citro doubled, Weaver singled and Marsch doubled to left for two RBIs before coming in on an RBI single by sophomore catcher Sean Bowen (South Harrison, NJ/Kingsway Regional).
NJCU got one run back in the second inning when Burke slammed a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence for a long homerun. Rowan took a 4-1 lead in the third as Winkler doubled and scored on an RBI double by Marsch. In the sixth inning, Gonzalez led off with an infield single to notch his 60th hit and NJCU loaded the bases but could not score. In the eighth, Winkler singled and Weaver walked before Marsch launched a 1-1 pitch deep to left for a three-run homer. NJCU got two runs back in the bottom of the eighth as Gonzalez walked and Gutierrez singled and Fiorentino walked. Gonzalez scored on a balk and Mena grounded out for an RBI.
