freshman CHARLES ALLEN (Rosenhayn, NJ/Bridgeton) placed third in the long jump and anchored the third-place 4x100-meter relay team despite battling injuries and junior MAHDI SUMTER (Rahway, NJ/Rahway) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship in the 110-meter hurdles as the New Jersey City University men's outdoor track and field team competed on May 8 at the 2010 New Jersey Athletic Conference Track and Field Championship, hosted by The College of New Jersey.  Much of the championship was contested against fierce, gusty winds.
 
In the scoring system that awards points on a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis for first through eighth place in each event, the Gothic Knights collected 30 points, finishing eighth overall. The College of New Jersey (259.50) captured the title for the 13th consecutive year. The event was the final of the 2010 regular season for NJCU.
 
Sumter provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship when he timed 14.86 seconds in the finals of the 110-meter hurdles—exceeded the NCAA standard of 14.88. In the 110 meter

preliminaries, he narrowly missed the NCAA mark when he was fifth of 16 hurdlers in 14.89 seconds.
 
Allen was third in the long jump to earn six team points for the Gothic Knights, landing a distance of 6.51 meters.
 
The 400-meter relay tandem, consisting of freshman CHRISTIAN COX (Cedar Run, NJ/Southern Regional), junior SHERMAN GOREE (Camden, NJ/Camden), junior CHARLES WAUGH (Camden, NJ/Camden) and Allen posted a season's-best time of 41.95 seconds—1/100th of a second faster than the 41.96 mark on April 23 at the Penn Relays—earning six team points. The time easily surpassed the ECAC qualifying standard of 44.00 seconds and narrowly missed the NCAA provisional mark of 41.90.
 
NJCU placed fourth of eighth teams in the 4x400-meter relay as the tandem of Cox, junior JASON MATTHEWS (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest), Waugh and Goree clocked 3:25.63, earning five team points.
 
Goree qualified for the ECAC Championship in the 400-meter hurdles in 56.45 seconds, placing sixth of 16 entrants, while surpassing the ECAC standard of 56.60.
 
In the 400-meter dash, Cox was seventh of 17 men in 50.40 seconds. Waugh was eighth of 21

sprinters in the 200-meter dash in 23.35 seconds. In the 100-meter dash preliminaries, Cox and Waugh listed ninth and 10th, respectively, of 19 athletes, with both teammates registering an 11.30 second finish. Waugh was also seventh in the long jump, scoring two team points by landing an attempt of 6.41 meters.
 
Freshman EVAN BAYTOPS (Irvington, NJ/Irvington) posted his third ECAC qualifying time this year in the 110 hurdles, surpassing the standard of 15.76 with a time of 15.66 seconds, good for 11th place. Baytops was 12th in the 400 hurdles in 59.46 seconds. Matthews was 11th in the long jump at 6.22 meters.
 
Junior ORALDO AUSTIN (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) was 20th in the long jump (5.27 meters). Freshman STEVEN GUEYE (Newark, NJ/St. Mary's (Elizabeth) was 22nd in the 800 meters (2:27.48).
