BOX SCORE
CAMDEN, NJ (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com)...In perhaps its stiffest non-conference test of the season, New Jersey City University's stingy defense limited nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins University to only four shots on goal, but the Blue Jays were able to knock in the rebound of a shot off the post in the 24th minute as Hopkins outlasted NJCU, 1-0, in the opening round of the Cialella Soccer Classic, hosted by Rutgers University-Camden.
NJCU drops to 2-2 on the season, with both losses 1-0 setbacks to two of the top programs in the nation—Johns Hopkins and North Carolina Wesleyan. Hopkins improves to a perfect 4-0-0. The Blue Jays are ranked #5 nationally by D3soccer.com and sixth by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). It was the first-ever meeting between the clubs.
In defeat, junior goalkeeper MIGUEL PEREZ (Jersey City, NJ/Dickinson) made three saves. Hopkins outshot NJCU, 13-8, but was limited to the four shots on target by the play of the Knights' starting defenders, three of whom played a full 90 minutes— freshman MOSTAFA IBRAHIM (Jersey City, NJ/Elharam (Cairo, Egypt), the reigning NJAC Rookie of the Week, sophomore JOSHUA GOCHIZ (Jersey City, NJ/Hudson Catholic), and junior LIONEL EMABAT (Jersey City, NJ/Dickinson). Sophomore IBRAHIMA BAYO (Newark, NJ/Weequahic) and junior JEFFREY GLASHAN (Neptune, NJ/Neptune) split time at the fourth defender slot.
Hopkins sophomore back Nick White (San Diego, CA/Patrick Henry)scored the lone goal of the game at 23:29. After a shot by senior midfielder Chris Wilson (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll)ripped off the right post, White picked up the ball on the opposite side of the box and tucked a shot into the left side of the net for his first goal of the season. Hopkins outshot NJCU 8-4 in the opening period.
Hopkins, which held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks, had several good scoring chances in the second half. With 18:22 remaining, sophomore midfielder Brandon Sumpio (Woodbridge, CT/The Hopkins School)was stopped one-on-one in the box by Perez.
The Gothic Knights had their best chance with 21:30 remaining after getting a direct kick from 20 yards out. NJCU nearly tied the game, but a shot by junior forward ALEX CERON (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) went just wide left.
Senior goalie Ravi Gill (Morganville, NJ/Marlboro)notched his third shutout in four games, making three saves for the Blue Jays.
NJCU will meet Franklin & Marshall College in the second round of the tournament on Sunday, September 12 at 2 p.m. Rutgers-Camden edged F&M by an identical 1-0 score in Saturday's other tournament game.
