WAYNE, NJ (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University was limited to six total shots—four on goal—and William Paterson University defeated the Gothic Knights, 3-0, in the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener for both sides on Saturday night at Pioneer Soccer Park.
NJCU (5-2-0, 0-1-0 NJAC) had its four-game winning streak snapped and was shutout for the first time in 12 games dating to last season. The Pioneers improved to 4-2-1 (1-0-0 NJAC). WPU leads the all-time series, 15-1. The Pioneers outshot NJCU, 16-6.
Senior defender Ali Ruddy (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) scored two unassisted goals for the Pioneers—one on a penalty kick. Sophomore forward Michelle Marabondo (Kenvil, NJ/Roxbury) added the other goal on an assist from sophomore midfielder Casey McGuigan (Hightstown, NJ/Robbinsville).
William Paterson freshman goalkeeper Alyssa Falduto (Nutley, NJ/Nutley)recorded four saves for the shutout. NJCU junior keeper LAURA ROBINSON (Edison, NJ/Edison) made five saves; NJCU also had one team save.
WPU outshot NJCU 9-4 in the first half and had several quality scoring chances. Marabondo hit the crossbar in the eighth minute. Later, the Pioneers got on the board at 23:15. After a yellow card on NJCU resulted in a free kick from just outside the box, Ruddy buried a well-struck shot into the middle of the net, just over a leaping Robinson.
NJCU appeared to have tied it at 43:29 of the second half when sophomore midfielder CHELSEA SPETHMANN (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Hasbrouck Heights-Wood Ridge) knocked in the rebound of a shot by junior forward JENNIFER ALBUJA (Union City, NJ/Hoboken), but the goal was nullified by an offside call. The Pioneers led 1-0 at the half.
The hosts extended the lead to 2-0 at 59:01 of the second half, as McGuigan slid a thru ball to Marabondo, who scored inside the right post. At 65:08, after an NJCU team save was followed by a hand ball in the box, Ruddy was awarded a penalty kick and scored down the middle of the target.
NJCU was outshot 7-2 in the second half and could not get off a clean scoring chance in the period. Albuja, junior forward JULIA CASERES (Union, NJ/Union) and junior midfielder KATLIN VARGO (Edison, NJ/Union Catholic) each had two shots in the game. Caseres, who leads Division III with 14 goals, did not score in a game for the first time this season.
NJCU will return to the pitch on Wednesday, September 22 at 4 p.m. when it hosts Ramapo College in an NJAC home game at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field.
