JERSEY CITY, NJ (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Ramapo College hit .268 as a team, including a .400 percentage in the second set and used 52 digs to hold the New Jersey City University attack at bay, as the Roadrunners defeated NJCU, 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-16) in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match on Tuesday night at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center on “Coach Charlie Brown Court.”
Ramapo improves to 6-1 (2-0 NJAC) with the win while NJCU drops to 3-6 (0-2 NJAC). Ramapo leads the all-time series, 20-7, despite the Gothic Knights owning wins in eight of the last 11 meetings.
For Ramapo, 6-foot-3 junior middle blocker Maura Burke (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) used her size advantage to notch a decisive .588 hitting percentage with 12 kills and only two errors (17 attacks), while adding four blocks. Junior outside hitter Michelle Ferrari (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) had a double-double with 12 kills, a .391 percentage (12-3-23), 10 digs and two aces.
NJCU was led by junior outside hitter TABITHA JORDAN (West New York, NJ/Memorial), who nearly registered her 13th career double-double. She finished with nine kills (9-5-36, .111) and nine digs. No other NJCU player had more than five winners.
Senior setter ALEX JOHANESEN (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) gave out 17 assists to increase her career total to 2,389. Junior libero MICHELLE RAYO (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep) chipped in seven digs and two aces.
Ramapo played 14 from its roster. Senior outside hitter Meagan Taege (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) had a .353 attack rate and nine kills (9-3-17) with six digs. Junior setter Tiffany Fischer (Woodcliff Lake, NJ/Pascack Hills) chalked up 29 assists.
In a tight first set, NJCU trailed 16-13 before four straight Ramapo errors—three on attack—gave the hosts a one-point, 17-16 margin. But the Roadrunners scored the next seven points as Ferrari landed back-to-back aces and Taege uncorked three consecutive kills—including one into the back corner and another cross court—as RCNJ built a 24-17 advantage. NJCU was able to draw within three, 24-21, before a service error ended the set.
RCNJ had 16 kills in each of the first two sets, but had a stellar 16-4-30 line in the second session. Burke hit .571 with five kills (5-1-7) and Ferrari added six kills (6-1-9) and a .556 percentage in the game. Ramapo led 11-7 before running off seven of the next eight points for an 18-8 margin, winning the game by 12. RCNJ never trailed in the final set as the Knights committed 12 attack errors.
NJCU will be back in action on Wednesday, September 22 at 7 p.m. when it hosts College of Staten Island in a non-conference match. Ramapo hosts two-time defending NJAC champion Richard Stockton College on Thursday, September 23 at 7 p.m. in Mahwah, NJ.
