JORDAN’S DOUBLE-DOUBLE LIFTS NJCU TO SWEEP OF JOHN JAY

- Tabitha Jordan had match highs in kills and aces, and notched her 13th career double-double as NJCU won for the second time in three days.

New Jersey City University junior outside hitter TABITHA JORDAN (West New York, NJ/Memorial) recorded her 13th career double-double with a match-best 17 kills, 12 digs and six aces as the Gothic Knights defeated John Jay College for the 17th consecutive time since 1995, sweeping the Bloodhounds, 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 28-26) in a non-conference match on Friday night at the Doghouse.
 
NJCU wins its second straight match—both by 3-0 results—and improves to 5-6 overall this season. John Jay drops to 1-10. NJCU leads the all-time series, 21-2.
 
Jordan nearly had as many kills individually as the entire John Jay team (20) and recorded 17 of NJCU's 31 winners. She hit .072 (17-12-69). Sophomore middle hitter BRITTANY EREZUMA (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) added a .400 hitting percentage, landing eight kills with no errors on 20 swings.
 
Senior setter ALEX JOHANESEN (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) distributed 26 assists and six digs, increasing her career total to 2,438.
 
Junior libero MICHELLE RAYO (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep) defended a match-best 21 digs. Sophomore defensive specialist AMANDA DOPICO (West New York, NJ/Memorial) contributed 17 digs and freshman outside hitter MARISSA SCARPA (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) added 13 digs.
 
John Jay hit -.009 and received nearly half its kills from junior outside hitter Justyna Kopec (Nowa Deba, Poland), who had nine winners, 19 digs and two blocks. Senior setter Crystal Reyes (Bronx, NY) tallied 13 assists and seven digs. Junior libero Kathleen Estevez (New York, NY) and junior outside hitter Rocio Chavira (Bronx, NY) each had 15 digs.
 
NJCU never trailed in the opening set as Jordan landed four of her aces in the game. NJCU led 7-1 early. JJC closed to within 13-10, before the Knights uncorked seven consecutive points behind Jordan's serving and opened a 21-11 lead, and prevailed 25-16.

In the second set Jordan collected six kills; John Jay only seven. NJCU started slowly and found itself trailing 9-4. But the Knights unleashed a 17-2 outburst to seize a 21-11 advantage, and won 25-17.
 
In the final set there were nine ties and three lead changes as NJCU hit .118 (13-7-51) and JJC added a .085 clip (9-5-47). Jordan had seven of her kills in the set and Johanesen delivered 11 assists. The hosts led for most of the set, opening a 15-8 lead midway through the contest. NJCU tied at 18-18 but the Bloodhounds reclaimed margins of 22-20 and 23-21. After a JJC attack error, Jordan tied it at 23-23 with a winner and freshman middle hitter ASHLEY LATUSHKO (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) landed an ace for match point. The Bloodhounds tied it on a Jordan attack error and took a 25-24 lead on an ace. Each team traded service errors and John Jay remained in front, 26-25, looking to force a fourth set. But JJC had yet another service error to even the set at 26-26, Erezuma landed a kill for another match point and Jordan sealed the victory with a shot.
 
NJCU is back in action on Thursday, September 30 at 7 p.m. in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match at Rutgers-Newark.
