Kean University broke a scoreless game with a goal off a loose ball in the 68th minute and added another tally off a deflection as the Cougars, ranked No. 7 in the NCAA South Atlantic Region edged New Jersey City University, 2-0, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference men's soccer game on Wednesday night.

Kean outshot NJCU, 15-10, to improve to 6-2-1 overall and maintain first place in the NJAC with a 3-0 mark. The Gothic Knights fall to 3-6, 1-3 in the league. Kean leads the all-time series 32-17-3, despite NJCU being 6-2-2 against the Cougars since 2001.

Kean sophomore forward Tiago Goetzke (Curitiba, Brazil) scored the game-winner for the Cougars for the fourth straight game and assisted on the second goal. Sophomore midfielder and countryman Abner Denis (Curitiba, Brazil) also had a goal and an assist, as he added an insurance goal in the 79th minute after assisting on the initial marker.

Kean senior keeper Alfredo Oquendo (North Plainfield, NJ) made three saves to preserve the shutout. Freshman goalkeeper ZAKARY AZMI (New Milford, NJ/Emerson) made one save in defeat in 78:48 of action. Junior keeper MANNY LOJO (Clark, NJ/Union Catholic) stopped one shot in the final 11:12.

Sophomore midfielder GABRIEL AVANS (Roselle Park, NJ/Union Catholic) tallied a game-high four shots (two on goal) in the loss for NJCU and sophomore forward NANA KOFI KUSI (Jersey City, NJ/Kumasi Academy (Ghana)) had three shots.

After the two long-time rivals played more than 67 minutes of scoreless soccer, Kean broke through at 67:35. Denis fired a shot from just outside the box that was blocked by an NJCU defender. But Goetzke picked up the loose ball on the right side of the box and slipped the rebound inside the right post for a 1-0 lead.

At the 78:48 mark, Azmi made a save on a shot by Goetzke but couldn't cover the rebound and a wide-open Denis knocked in the deflection.

NJCU is back in action on Saturday, October 2 at 1 p.m. when it hosts Richard Stockton College in an NJAC game at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field.
