NEWARK, NJ (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University sophomore middle hitter BRITTANY EREZUMA (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) notched a match-high and career-best 10 kills but it wasn't enough as Rutgers-Newark swept a New Jersey Athletic Conference match from the Gothic Knights, 25-19, 25-17, 25-19, on Thursday night at The Golden Dome.
The loss snapped NJCU's two-match winning streak as the Knights drop to 5-7 (0-3 NJAC). NJCU had won eight of the last nine meetings with Rutgers-Newark (5-10, 1-4 NJAC) entering the contest. The Scarlet Raiders lead the all-time series, 32-9.
Erezuma had 10 kills and only five errors for a .156 percentage (.32 attempts)—one more than her previous career high—while junior outside hitter TABITHA JORDAN (West New York, NJ/Memorial) registered 13 digs and nine kills.
Senior setter ALEX JOHANESEN (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) inched closer to the 2,500-assist threshold with 23 more, adding six digs and one ace. She now has 2,461 assists for her career.
Also for NJCU, freshman outside hitter MARISSA SCARPA (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) added 14 digs and sophomore defensive specialist AMANDA DOPICO (West New York, NJ/Memorial) tallied 11 digs. Freshman middle hitter ASHLEY LATUSHKO (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) landed three solo blocks.
Newark never trailed in any of the three sets and was led by freshman setter Jen Mendoza (Lake Hiawatha, NJ/Parsippany) with 28 assists and nine digs. Sophomore middle blocker Rachel Witt (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) equaled the match high with 10 kills. Sophomore opposite Stephanie Touzan (West New York, NJ/Memorial) and junior Toni Moppert (Woodcliff Lake, NJ/Pascack Hills) each had nine kills. Touzan hit .500 without an error (9-0-18) and Moppert contributed 14 digs while hitting .281, also without an attack miscue (9-0-32).
Raider freshman outside hitter Ula Nieznalska (Wallington, NJ/Wallington) had a match high 21 digs to go along with six kills and two aces. Senior middle blocker Crystal Navarro (Passaic, NJ/Passaic) delivered three of Rutgers-Newark's eight aces while adding three blocks.
NJCU is back on the court on Saturday, October 2 in a non-conference tri-match in Lancaster, PA. NJCU meets Stevenson University for the second time this season at 12 p.m. before facing host Lancaster Bible College at 2 p.m.
