JERSEY CITY, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) |
Senior midfielder TOM KRYCHKOWSKI (North Arlington, NJ/North Arlington) connected on his second game-winning goal when he rifled home a bouncing ball in the 65th minute and freshman DANIEL SEQUEIRA (South River, NJ/South River) made three saves to register a shutout in his first career start in goal as New Jersey City University snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 1-0 non-conference victory over Lehman College on Monday at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field.

NJCU improved to 4-10-1 with the win and defeats the Lightning for the fourth consecutive meeting. Lehman, the first place team in the CUNYAC conference, had an eight-game winning streak snapped and falls to 10-5. NJCU leads the all-time series, 9-3-3 (49-19 goals differential).

The Gothic Knights held a 25-13 margin in shots and had a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks. The contest was a physical

one with a combined 45 fouls. The game was NJCU's fifth straight decided by a one-goal margin and ninth one-goal contest of the season.

The only goal came at the 64:16 mark of the second half. After a Lehman foul, junior midfielder GABRIEL AVANS (Roselle Park, NJ/Union Catholic) took a free kick from the right endline that bounced into the box over several NJCU attackers and Lehman fullbacks. Krychkowski uncorked a one-timer on the bouncing cross from the left wing into the top left side of the goal for his third goal of the season; he now leads the team in game-winners. He moved into second place on the team with nine points. GABRIEL AVANS tallied his first assist of the season.

“After I hit the ball over the goal on a previous shot, I had a feeling the ball was going to come back post but I didn't know where so I positioned myself at the back post, waiting for it,” said Krychkowski, describing the winner. “When it did I was ready for it. I told myself I was going to score after I hit the previous shot over the goal and when it came to me, I buried it in the back of the net. It felt good to finally get a win and be the player to end out losing streak.”

Sequeira, a converted forward, made his first career start in goal and gave NJCU its first shutout of the season. He made two sensational saves to keep the Lightning off the board. At the 27:43 mark he dove towards the left post to smother a shot by junior midfielder Thaddeus Ikwuka (Bronx, NY/All Hollows). He also prevented a goal on a header off a free kick at the 75:59 mark by junior forward Oumar Niang (Bronx, NY/Manhattan Center).

Lehman junior Marcos Coto-Batres (Mamaroneck, NY/Rye Neck) made seven saves to keep the Lightning alive, including a 24th minute stop of a shot by NJCU freshman midfielder MANNY MARTIS (Union, NJ/Union)Krychkowski just missed a shot high in the 44th minute.

NJCU got a solid defensive effort from freshman EDWIN UMANZOR (Linden, NJ/Linden) and seniors HENRY GUADALUPE (Prospect Park, NJ/Manchester Regional) and LIONEL EMABAT (Jersey City, NJ/Dickinson).

NJCU will be home for a New Jersey Athletic Conference game against Ramapo College on Wednesday, October 19 at 4 p.m. Lehman hosts Berkeley College that night at 7 p.m.
