th double-double of the season with 19 assists and 18 digs but after winning the opening set,
New Jersey City University could not hold the advantage as SUNY Old Westbury rallied to knock off NJCU, 3-1 (14-25, 25-26, 25-19, 25-19) in the final contest of the City College of New York Quad Match on Saturday at the Nat Holman Gymnasium.
NJCU (5-18) loses its fourth straight and finishes the three-match event with an 0-3 mark. The Panthers improved to 18-14. Although NJCU leads the all-time series, 9-2, Old Westbury defeated the Knights for the first time since September 20, 1990, snapping NJCU's seven-match winning streak between the schools. The Panthers had a 46-29 margin in kills.
Junior outside hitter
KIARA MARTINEZ (Newark, NJ/East Side) had a career-high eight kills and hit .412 with just one error on 17 swings. She added 14 digs and six of NJCU's 12 service aces.
Rookie middle blocker
JADE MEDLEY (Newark, NJ/Hudson Catholic) hit .217, flooring seven kills (7-2-23) with three blocks (two solo). Senior outside hitter
TABITHA JORDAN (West New York, NJ/Memorial) had 13 digs while senior libero
AMANDA DOPICO (West New York, NJ/Memorial) provided 11 digs.
The Panthers were led by senior outside hitter
Tynisha George (Medford, NY) who collected a double-double of 11 kills (11-5-31, .194) and 10 digs and senior middle hitter
Ashley Greene (Bay Shore, NY) hit .280 with 11 kills. Senior setter
Kristina Giordano (Huntington Station, NY) dished 33 assists and 12 digs. Freshman middle hitter
Corrine Protasiewicz (Valley Stream, NY) had eight kills and seven digs. Sophomore right side
Kimberly Catania (Islip, NY) and junior libero
Shakira Canty (Troy, NY) combined for 25 digs.
NJCU won the opening set convincingly, hitting .231 with nine kills while OW was held to -.152 hitting. Leading by one, 10-9, NJCU opened an 18-10 lead before winning the set by 11.
There were eight ties and three lead changes in the second set but OW had a 14-7 margin in kills and hit .333 (14-4-30). Tied 11-11, the Panthers reeled off six straight points and 12-of-14 to seize a 23-13 lead before taking the set, 25-16.
In the third set, there were six ties, the last at 17-17, before the Panthers pounced on the next six points for a 23-17 lead, en route to a 25-19 win and a 2-1 lead in the match.
In the fourth set, Old Westbury blitzed 17 kills and hit .295 with four errors and 44 attacks, while NJCU was held to seven winners. OW led 18-12 before NJCU twice closed with two points, including 20-18. The Panthers scored five of the next six points to seal the win.
NJCU will return to the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center on Monday, October 24 at 7 p.m. in a non-conference match against the College of Mount Saint Vincent.
