JADE MEDLEY (Newark, NJ/Hudson Catholic) tallied double figures in kills for the second consecutive match as
New Jersey City University snapped its losing streak with a 3-0 sweep of the College of New Rochelle, 25-22, 25-15, 25-20, in a non-conference women's volleyball match on Tuesday night at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center on 'Coach Charlie Brown Court.'
NJCU (4-8) snapped a six-match losing streak while dropping the Blue Angels to 8-4. CNR had won five of its last six and eight of its last 10 matches entering the contest. It was the first-ever meeting between the schools in women's volleyball.
Medley hit .316 with 10 kills and four errors in 19 attempts while rejecting two solo blocks. Rookie setter
CINDY GARCIA (West New York, NJ/Memorial) notched her seventh double-double in 12 matches to open her career, finishing with 22 assists and 13 digs.
Freshman middle hitter
INDIGO HATCHER (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) hit .294 with six kills (6-1-17) and three blocks (two solo). Junior opposite
KIARA MARTINEZ (Newark, NJ/East Side) added a .571 attack rate on four kills (4-0-7) and nine digs and senior outside hitter
TABITHA JORDAN (West New York, NJ/Memorial) contributed 10 digs and six kills.
New Rochelle received nine kills, eight digs and two blocks from junior middle blocker
Elizabeth Johnston (Plano, TX) while junior libero
Kristina Nilaj (Yonkers, NY) defended a match-high 14 digs. Senior setter
Zena Jamal (Poughkeepsie, NY) delivered 19 assists.
NJCU did not trail in the first or third sets, hitting .212 in the opening period with 13 kills (13-6-33). NJCU hit .168 as a team for the match (32-16-95) while limiting the Blue Angels to a -.030 percentage (25-28-101).
Leading by one, 11-10 in the first set, NJCU scored the next six points and seven of the next eight for an 18-11 lead before CNR mounted a comeback and pulled with one, 22-21, after an ace by
Nilaj. But
Medley floored a kill and CNR was called for a pair of ball handling errors before NJCU won the set, 25-22.
In the second set, NJCU had 10 kills and hit .240 (10-4-25), mounting a 17-7 lead before winning the game by 10 points, 25-15.
In the final set, NJCU again led 18-11 before the Angels rallied, shaving the deficit to 18-16. But after a service error by CNR,
Jordan floored a kill and a combo block by rookie opposite
KELYSHA EDWARDS (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) and
Hatcher gave the Gothic Knights a 21-17 lead. A kill by
Edwards gave NJCU a 24-19 advantage before a kill from
Hatcher sealed the win.
NJCU will host three-time defending New Jersey Athletic Conference champion Richard Stockton College in an NJAC match on Thursday, October 8 at 7 p.m.
