MAHWAH, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Junior outside hitter KENNY LISK (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) continued his offensive tear at the net with 16 kills and a resounding .652 attack percentage and senior setter JORGE RODRIGUEZ (Havana, Cuba/Memorial) achieved his fourth career 50-assist match as New Jersey City University defeated Lancaster Bible College, 3-1 (25-23, 25-20, 15-25, 25-16) in a neutral court North East Collegiate Volleyball Association Metro Division match on Saturday at the Bill Bradley Center. It was the second match of a tri-match.
NJCU evened its record at 4-4 (1-4 NECVA Metro) with the win over the Chargers (0-11, 0-6 NECVA Metro). NJCU leads the all-time series, 4-1, and has won the last four meetings.
Lisk led three NJCU players in double figures in kills with 16 winners and only one error in 23 attempts. Rodriguez dished exactly 50 assists and had a .420 setting percentage. Senior libero CHRIS EDRA (Edison, NJ/J.P. Stevens) defended a match-high 15 digs.
Sophomore outside hitter MICHAL KUCZA (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) slammed 13 kills and hit .303 (13-3-33) with six digs. Freshman opposite RICH BOYLE (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) added 10 kills and three block assists. Freshman middle blocker NATHAN JOUBERT (Union City, NJ/Union City) collected eight kills and two blocks. Senior defensive specialist WILTON JIMENEZ (Passaic, NJ/Passaic) had seven digs.
LBC received 35 assists and 15 digs from senior setter BJ Boosz (Canton, OH). Junior middle blocker Dan McAllister (Etters, PA) hit .400 with 10 kills (10-2-20) and seven blocks, including four solo. Junior outside hitter Jesse Corbin (Pittsburgh, PA) added 11 kills (11-6-26, .192) and seven digs.
There were 13 ties and five lead changes in the opening set. NJCU trailed early 18-12 before scoring six in a row to tie it at 18-18. Ties ensued at 19, 20, 21, and 22. After a kill by Boyle made it 23-22, LBC responded with a kill by Corbin for a 23-23 scenario. But Boyle landed a kill and then Boyle combined with Joubert for a block to five NJCU the two-point win.
In set two, NJCU planted 15 kills and hit .294 in the game, led by Lisk who hit .800 with four kills in five swings and Kucza at .500 (4-0-8). The Knights opened an early five-point lead, 15-10, and maintained a lead of at least four the remainder of the set, winning the frame by five after a winner by Kucza.
The Chargers forced a fourth set with a 25-15 win in the third set. LBC led early 15-5 and won the set by 10. The Knights hit -.074 in the set. Junior outside hitter Justin Perkins (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) hit .500 with four kills (4-1-6) in the set.
But in a fourth set that was an offensive slugfest, it was NJCU throwing the harder punches, hitting a staggering .654 as a team in the set, scoring 19 of its 25 points on kills with just two errors (19-2-26). LBC hit well at .429 (12-3-21) but could not find an answer for Lisk who was brilliant in the game with a .857 attack percentage and six kills (6-0-7). For good measure, Kucza added a .571 attack rate with five shots (5-1-7). Leading 11-10, NJCU scored eight of the next 10 points for a 19-12 advantage and prevailed by nine points, 25-16.
