MAHWAH, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Junior outside hitter KENNY LISK (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) hammered a career high 21 kills and hit .381 but after winning the first set, New Jersey City University fell to host Ramapo College in four sets, 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 25-15, 25-22) in a North East Collegiate Volleyball Association Metro Division match on Saturday at the Bill Bradley Center. It was the first match of a tri-match.
NJCU fell to 3-4 (0-4 NECVA Metro) with the loss while Ramapo improved to 6-6 (4-5 Metro) and swept the season series while winning the 13th straight meeting between the long-time rivals. RCNJ leads the all-time series, 43-11.
Lisk, whose previous career high was 20 kills as a freshman at Lancaster Bible on March 21, 2009, had 15 kills in the first two sets before finishing with nearly half of NJCU's 46 teams kills, planting 21 with only five errors in 42 swings. He added five digs and two blocks.
Senior setter JORGE RODRIGUEZ (Havana, Cuba/Memorial) distributed 43 assists and senior libero CHRIS EDRA (Edison, NJ/J.P. Stevens) defended a match-high 17 digs.
Also for NJCU, freshman opposite RICH BOYLE (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) added 11 kills and hit .250 while sophomore outside hitter MICHAL KUCZA (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) had nine kills and seven digs.
Ramapo hit .267 as a team and had three players in double figures in kills, led by sophomore middle blocker Joel Castro (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township) with a .607 hitting percentage and 18 kills (18-1-28). Sophomore outside hitter Andrew Brown (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) collected 15 kills and hit .375 (15-3-32) with eight digs and two solo blocks and junior middle hitter Paul Konopacki (Monroe Township, NJ/St. Joseph's-Metuchen) also tallied 15 kills and hit .400 (15-3-30) with two blocks.
Junior setter Mike Hrehovcik (Little Falls, NJ/Passaic Valley) delivered 54 assists and eight digs. RCNJ also received 13 digs from senior libero Kevin McNerney (Bayonne, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) and 19 digs and two blocks from junior middle blocker Colin McNeill (Little Falls, NJ/Passaic Valley).
In the opening set there were four ties but just one lead change—in favor of NJCU. Ramapo led 21-17 late in the set after back-to-back kills by Castro and Konopacki. But Lisk, who hit .545 with eight kills (8-2-11) in the set, helped NJCU score eight of the final 10 points to win the game, 25-23. Lisk had four kills during the late run and tied the match at 22-22. A solo stuff by sophomore middle blocker CORRADO DeVINCENZO (Bayonne, NJ/County Prep) made it 23-22. After an attack error by RCNJ, Brown cut the deficit to one, 24-23, before Lisk slammed a kill for set point.
RCNJ won the second set by hitting .360 with 12 kills. Castro was 4-for-4 on attack in the set and Konopacki had four kills in eight swings. There were six ties and three lead changes in the set. After Ramapo opened an 18-14 lead, Lisk did all he could to keep NJCU alive, hitting .455 with seven kills (7-2-11) in the game. Lisk slammed two in a row to cut it to 19-18 and added kills to keep it a one-point game, 20-19 and 21-20. But a kill by Konopacki and an NJCU attack error made it a three-point lead and Ramapo won 25-21 to tie the match.
In the third set, Ramapo hit .385 with 17 kills and only two errors and won 25-15. Trailing by five, 15-10, NJCU made it a two-point game, 16-14, on a kill by Kucza. But Castro and Konopacki combined for five kills as the Roadrunners scored nine of the final 10 points.
In the fourth set, Ramapo collected 19 kills and there were three ties and three lead changes. Ramapo led 18-13 but four Roadrunner attack errors and a kill by Kucza made it a one-point set 19-18. Kucza added another shot for a 20-19 deficit before Lisk kept the deficit at one with a kill at 21-20. But a kill by Castro and an attack error put the hosts ahead, 23-20, and RCNJ clinched the win with a kill by Konopacki.
