JERSEY CITY, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Junior outside hitter KENNY LISK (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) registered a mind-boggling .750 attack percentage, slamming 13 kills and only one error in 16 attempts as New Jersey City University hit .466 as a team and easily swept a non-conference match from City College of New York, 3-0 (25-11, 25-21, 25-19) in the opening match of a tri-match on Sunday at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center on “Coach Charlie Brown Court.”
Lisk led NJCU to its fifth win of the year (5-4), dropping CCNY (3-11) in 60 minutes. NJCU leads the all-time series, 21-5 and has won the last 11 meetings, including seven by 3-0 results.
While NJCU hammered 45 kills and made just 11 errors in 73 attempts, the opening set was the most impressive, as NJCU, winning 25-11, chalked up a resounding team percentage of .722 with 14 kills and only one error in 18 attempts, while notching an 81 percent sideout rate (9-11).
Freshman opposite #RICH BOYLE3 (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) added a .556 attack rate with 11 kills and just one error (11-1-18) while sophomore outside hitter MICHAL KUCZA (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) collected nine kills (9-2-15) and hit .467.
Senior setter JORGE RODRIGUEZ (Havana, Cuba/Memorial) dished 42 assists for a .646 setting percentage and added three blocks. Senior libero CHRIS EDRA (Edison, NJ/J.P. Stevens) defended 11 digs to increase his 10th place career defensive total to 859 digs. Sophomore middle blocker CORRADO DeVINCENZO (Bayonne, NJ/County Prep) hit .800 with four kills (4-0-5) and three blocks.
In defeat, CCNY sophomore middle blocker Nick Siriban (East Meadow, NY) tallied 12 kills for a .318 percentage (12-5-22) and five blocks (three solo). Sophomore outside hitter Matthew Ng (Bayside, NY) added nine kills. Freshman setter Brian Yik Lim (Staten Island, NY) had 29 assists.
In the opening set, NJCU jumped out to leads of 8-1 and 19-5 and easily won the set. The second set was not as routine as the teams traded 14 ties and five lead changes. But NJCU still hit .310 in the set with 15 kills (15-6-29) and used its offensive firepower to take control of the game after trailing 15-11. The Knights battled back, taking the lead, 16-15, when a Rodriguez solo block gave the hosts its fifth point in a row.
The Beavers twice regained two point leads off NJCU attack errors, including 21-19. But NJCU ran off six consecutive points to win the set, 25-21. Back-to-back slams by Lisk tied it at 21-21. An ace by Rodriguez and combo block by Boyle and DeVincenzo made it 23-21 before Boyle and Lisk chalked up kills to close the set.
In the third set, NJCU buried 16 kills and hit .462 (16-4-26). Tied at 12-12, NJCU scored six of the next seven points, claiming an 18-13 lead on an ace by sophomore serving specialist VIN GENOVA (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield). From there, NJCU led by at least four the rest of the way, sealing the match on a pair of kills by Boyle and freshman middle blocker NATHAN JOUBERT (Union City, NJ/Union City).
