BROOKLYN, NY (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University junior outside hitter KENNY LISK (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) slammed 11 kills without an error in 15 attempts and hit .733 in two games as the Gothic Knights swept a non-conference match from New York City College of Technology, 3-0 (25-10, 29-27, 25-20) on Tuesday night at Klitgord Gymnasium.
NJCU improved to 6-5 overall and is now 6-0 all-time against City Tech (1-7). NJCU hit .283 as a team (46-18-99), and crushed the Yellow Jackets in the opening set with a team attack percentage of .609—16 kills and two errors on 23 spikes.
Lisk is now hitting .442 this season with 124 kills and only 21 errors in 233 attempts. Freshman opposite RICH BOYLE (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) added 10 kills and a .300 attack percentage (10-4-20) and sophomore outside hitter MICHAL KUCZA (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) added a .462 attack rate with seven kills (7-1-13).
Senior setter JORGE RODRIGUEZ (Havana, Cuba/Memorial) delivered 32 in 69 attempts for a .464 setting rate, increasing his career assists total to 1,925 in his quest to become the third player in school history to reach the 2,000 threshold. Senior libero CHRIS EDRA (Edison, NJ/J.P. Stevens) defended six digs in two sets to increase his fifth place career total to 956.
Also for NJCU, senior defensive specialist/outside hitter WILTON JIMENEZ (Passaic, NJ/Passaic) finished with six digs and four kills and rookie outside hitter AJ FLORES (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep) added five kills (5-3-10, .200).
City Tech received six kills and a .278 percentage (6-1-8) from Vern Phillip and 18 assists from setter Jacob Ramroop. Fitzgerald Charles landed four aces.
In the first set, NJCU won easily, breaking open a 10-7 contest by scoring 15 of the final 18 points of the set. Lisk hit .750 in the game with six kills (6-0-8) and Kucza added a .571 rate with four kills (4-0-7). Rodriguez landed three kills in three attempts.
In the second set, NJCU mixed its starters and reserves into the game and there were 14 ties and seven lead changes. NJCU totaled 19 kills in the set.
With Lisk out of the game, NJCU trailed 20-15. He re-entered and the Knights scored five consecutive points as Lisk slammed three winners in a row to help tie it at 20-20. The teams traded ties at 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, and 27. NJCU had led 23-22 on a kill by Kucza before Fitzgerald tallied two kills in a row to give the hosts a 24-23 lead. Kucza tied it at 24-24 with a shot. An attack error gave City Tech a 25-24 lead before Boyle provided a winner. NJCU trailed 26-25 after another attack error but responded with back-to-back kills by Kucza and Lisk. Phillip tied it at 27-27 with a kill before NJCU won the set on a winner by Lisk and a City Tech attack error.
Lisk and Edra did not play in the third set, but NJCU never trailed with its bench in the game. The Knights held a 17-11 lead before the Yellow Jackets managed to cut it to one at 17-17, 18-17, 20-19 and 21-20. But NJCU capped the match with four consecutive points as Flores floored a kill, Kucza landed an ace and Boyle provided back-to-back shots to seal it.
NJCU will play first-year Kean University, a rival in all other New Jersey Athletic Conference team sports, for the first time in men's volleyball when the Knights visit Union, NJ on Thursday, February 17 at 7:30 p.m. for a North East Collegiate Volleyball Association Metro Division match.
