Olivet College scored six runs in the second inning to build a 7-2 lead and limited New Jersey City University to four hits, defeating the Gothic Knight softball team, 11-6, in the seventh game of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on March 10 at the Northwest Cape Coral Complex.

In a game that originally began at 8:30 a.m., the contest did not conclude until nearly 5:30 p.m.—some nine hours later—after it was suspended for nearly seven hours due to rain with the Comets leading 1-0 in the top of the first inning. With the win, Olivet improved to 8-1; NJCU fell to 3-4.

In defeat, the top three batters for NJCU scored all six runs and accounted for three of the four hits. Sophomore designated player REBECCA SATZ (Morris Plains, NJ/Morristown) drove in two runs, going 2-for-4 with a solo homerun. Junior pitcher/left fielder JESS MUCERINO (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park) scored three runs, batting 1-for-2. Junior leadoff and shortstop MEGAN GINTER (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) scored twice and had a pair of stolen bases.

The Comets were paced by senior center fielder Jenny Robbins (Fenton, MI), who drove in four RBIs, batting 3-for-5 with two runs and a homerun. Junior second baseman Brooke Coshow (Niles, MI) was 3-for-5 with three runs, two RBIs and a homer and sophomore right fielder Ciara Santos (Lansing, MI) hit a three-run homerun, and was 1-for-4.

Also for the Comets sophomore third baseman Lindsey Maas (Pinckney, MI) and freshman left fielder Terri Hurosky (Nashville, MI) each had two hits.

Junior right-hander Kelsey Greene (Burr Oak, MI) won for the Comets (2-0), allowing three earned runs (six total) and four hits in 7.0 innings. She struck out eight and walked four.

Mucerino took the loss for NJCU (1-3), giving up six earned runs and seven hits with three walks in the first two innings. Sophomore righty ASHLEY O'BEIRNE (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Immaculate Conception) tossed the final 5.0 innings, allowing four runs and seven hits.

Before the rains came, Olivet took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Robbins tripled and scored on a passed ball. NJCU came to bat before the game was suspended, and once it restarted, took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the opening inning. Ginter walked, stole second and third and Mucerino walked and stole second to put a pair of runners in scoring position. A fielder's choice and subsequent throwing error scored both NJCU players.

But in the second inning, the Comets posted six runs on six hits, including a pair of three-run homers. Maas and Hurosky led off with singles and Robbins lofted a three-run shot to left field. Later Coshow singled, Greene was hit by a pitch, and both came home when Santos lifted a homer over the left field fence.

NJCU cut the deficit to 7-4 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning, taking advantage of three Olivet errors that allowed Ginter and Mucerino to both come around.

In the third inning, back-to-back two-out doubles by Coshow and Greene made it 8-4 and Robbins had an RBI single in the fourth inning for a 9-4 margin. NJCU trimmed the lead to 9-6 with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as Mucerino singled with two outs and Satz, the 2010 New Jersey Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year, belted her second career homer to center field—the first of her sophomore campaign. Coshow hit a two-run homerun in the fifth inning to account for the final Olivet runs.
