BOX SCORE
CAPE CORAL, FL (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Senior first baseman TAYLOR LANG (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs to help lead the New Jersey City University softball team to an 11-2, six-inning victory over Regis College (Mass.) in the final game of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on March 10 at the Northwest Cape Coral Complex.
NJCU concluded the eight-game spring trip with a 4-4 record while Regis fell to 0-8. Leading 5-2, NJCU scored six runs in the sixth inning to seal the win.
Freshman catcher MARISSA BARISO (Hewitt, NJ/West Milford) belted her third homerun of the trip and finished with three runs and two RBIs, going 3-for-4. Junior shortstop MEGAN GINTER (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) added a 3-for-4 day, with a run and RBI.
Sophomore right-hander ASHLEY O'BEIRNE (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Immaculate Conception) improved to 3-2 on the season. In 6.0 innings, she allowed one earned run and seven hits—all singles—with three walks and two strikeouts. When Regis did get on base, it stranded 10 runners.
For Regis, junior pitcher Kendra Abram (Acushnet, MA) was 2-for-4 at the plate. On the mound she took the loss, allowing 11 runs—but three earned—with 12 hits against. She had three Ks and two walks. Junior first baseman Shannon Hurley (Billerica, MA) added a run in a 2-for-4 effort.
NJCU scored twice in the second inning to grab a 2-0 lead. Bariso led off with a double and scored on an RBI double by Lang, before coming home on a wild pitch. Regis got a run back in the top of the third on a pair of singles, but NJCU made it 3-1 in the bottom of the third when Bariso drilled a solo homerun to center field.
In the fourth inning, the Gothic Knights increased the lead to 5-2. After a two-out error extended the inning, NJCU took advantage. Freshman center fielder CASEY PEREZ (West New York, NJ/Academy of the Holy Angels) reached on the error and stole second—one of her two steals in the game. Lang, who led off with a walk, scored on an RBI single by Ginter and Perez came around on an RBI double by junior left fielder JESS MUCERINO (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park).
After Regis scored a single run in the fifth on an error, NJCU enforced the eight-run rule by collecting six runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth inning, as the Knights sent nine players to the plate. Sophomore SAMANTHA RUDICK (Closter, NJ/Northern Valley Regional-Demarest) had a pinch hit single before NJCU struck out twice. Ginter singled Rudick to third, and stole second, before a Regis error extended the inning and brought home Rudick. Sophomore designated player REBECCA SATZ (Morris Plains, NJ/Morristown) and Bariso followed with RBI singles to make it an 8-2 lead. Satz scored on another error by the Pride and Lang ended the game with a two-run single to center field, which scored senior second baseman DANIELLE DELFINO (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep) and Bariso for the 10th and 11 runs.
NJCU begins the northern portion of its schedule on Friday, March 18 at 3 p.m. when it hosts Brooklyn College in its 2011 home opener—a non-conference doubleheader at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex.
