No Brooklyn player had multiple hits. Freshman pitcher Marie Oneto (Brooklyn, NY) took the loss (1-3), allowing nine earned runs and 13 hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 5.2 innings.
In the first inning, Mucerino had a one-out single, stole second and third and scored when Bariso had an RBI single on the seventh pitch of the at bat. Brooklyn loaded the bases in the second inning and with one out, junior Samantha Lombardi (Brooklyn, NY) had a pinch-hit RBI groundout to tie it. O'Beirne ended the threat, stranding two runners in scoring position, with a strikeout.
NJCU regained a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Ginter had an RBI single, but Brooklyn tied it again in the fourth inning when freshman left fielder Stephanie Caravello (Brooklyn, NY) walked, moved to second base on another walk, and scored after back-to-back wild pitches.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the fifth inning. Mucerino had a one-out single and scored the go-ahead run when Satz doubled to left-center.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, NJCU put the game away with seven runs and five hits as 10 batters came to the plate. A leadoff pinch hit walk and pinch hit single by sophomore SAMANTHA RUDICK (Closter, NJ/Northern Valley Regional-Demarest), followed by an RBI single by Ginter made it 4-2. Mucerino laced a two-RBI triple down the left field line to expand the lead to 6-2 before she scored on a throwing error as Satz reached on a fielder's choice. Mucerino would have scored anyway as Bariso doubled off the center field fence to bring home Satz and make it an 8-2 margin. Bariso stole third and senior first baseman TAYLOR LANG (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) walked and stole second with two outs. Cardona came to the plate for the second time in the inning and lifted a walkoff single to right field, scoring Bariso and Lang for the ninth and 10th runs as the winning margin of eight was reached.
**********************GAME 2: NEW JERSEY CITY 8, BROOKLYN 0 (6 innings)**********************
In game two, NJCU scored three times in the first inning and a pair of runs in the fourth and sixth innings to stamp an 8-0 shutout. Ginter, Mucerino and Satz, the first three batters in the lineup, each scored twice and had one hit and one RBI. Ginter and Satz each belted homeruns in the contest.
Senior second baseman DANIELLE DELFINO (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep) was 2-for-3. Bariso and Lang each had one RBI and one run.
On the mound, Mucerino evened her record at 2-2, allowing only six hits, including five singles in 6.0 innings. She fanned two and walked two and threw only 73 pitches.
Caravello, the first baseman in game two, freshman shortstop Allison Donovan (Middle Village, NY) and senior third baseman Danielle Maresca (Brooklyn, NY) accounted for all of the Bulldogs' hits, each batting 2-for-3 in the game.
Freshman pitcher Tara Diesel (Bethpage, NY) took the loss (1-3), allowing eight runs (five earned) and seven hits with seven walks and one strikeout in 5.1 innings.
NJCU scored all the runs it would need in the first inning. Ginter hammered an 0-2 pitch over the left field fence for her first homer of the season and the second of her career. Mucerino was hit by a pitch and Satz reached on an error before Mucerino scored on a sacrifice fly by Lang. Satz who stole second, later came home on a wild pitch. NJCU left the bases loaded in the inning.
After leaving the bases full in the third inning without scoring, NJCU broke through with a pair of runs in the fourth. Ginter led off with an eight-pitch walk, stole second and scored when Mucerino tripled down the left field line—her second three-bagger of the day. Bariso followed with an RBI double to deep center.
In the fifth inning, Satz made a great defensive play to keep the game scoreless, diving to her left to make a tough catch before turning the line drive into a double play. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Lang doubled to left field and scored on an error.
NJCU capped the win with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Satz powered the first pitch of the inning over the left center field wall for her third career homer and second of the season. Bariso walked and Delfino singled, before each advanced on a ground out. With one out, Bariso scored the walkoff run on a wild pitch.
NJCU plays its first road doubleheader of the season on Saturday, March 19 at 1 p.m. when it visits Hunter College.
