PROVIDENCE, RI (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Junior outside hitter KENNY LISK (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) hammered home a .600 hitting percentage and freshman opposite RICH BOYLE (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) planted 10 kills as New Jersey City University registered a .479 team attack percentage in a 3-0 (25-11, 25-20, 26-24) blanking of City College of New York in the second match of the Wildcats Invitational on Friday night at the Harborside Recreation Center.
Senior setter JORGE RODRIGUEZ (Havana, Cuba/Memorial)distributed 34 assists and added two aces to become the third player in school history to surpass 2,500 career assists.
NJCU, which had 41 kills and only six errors in 73 attacks posted its highest team percentage of the season and its best rate since hitting .500 against NYU-Poly on February 20, 2007. With the win NJCU improved to 13-15 and defeated CCNY (10-18) for the second time this season and the 12th consecutive meeting overall (including eight 3-0 sweeps). NJCU is 22-5 all-time against the Beavers.
NJCU has only hit better than .307 in one other match this season, and the opponent was also CCNY on February 13 when the Knights posted a .466 rate.
Lisk pounded nine kills without making an error on attack in 15 swings (9-0-15). Boyle landed a team-best 10 kills and hit .471 (10-2-17) with two blocks.
Also for NJCU, sophomore middle hitter CORRADO DeVINCENZO (Bayonne, NJ/County Prep) totaled six kills and hit .500 (6-1-10) with four blocks. Sophomore outside hitter MICHAL KUCZA (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) added six kills and hit .455 (6-1-11) and rookie middle hitter NATHAN JOUBERT (Union City, NJ/Union City) also had six kills (6-2-11, .364). Senior libero CHRIS EDRA (Edison, NJ/J.P. Stevens) didn't have many balls hit back at him with NJCU's offense being so prolific, but with three digs increased his all-time program record to 1,150.
In defeat, sophomore outside hitter Matthew Ng (Bayside, NY) had 13 kills for CCNY (13-7-28, .214) and sophomore middle blocker Derell Williams (Baltimore, MD) added seven kills and hit .500 (7-1-12). Sophomore middle blocker Nick Siriban (East Meadow, NY) tallied 10 kills and two blocks. Freshman setter Brian Yik Lim (Staten Island, NY) finished with 31 assists and five digs.
NJCU jumped out a 16-6 lead in the opening set and never trailed, winning convincing by 14 points, 25-11. The Gothic Knights posted a staggering .562 attack rate in the set (10-1-16).
There were six ties and five lead changes in the second set. NJCU hit .375 with 11 winners (11-2-24). CCNY had a two-point lead midway through the period before NJCU seized control. A pair of kills by Kucza and DeVincenzo made it 22-17 and kills from Boyle and Lisk gave the Knights a 24-19 advantage before CCNY committed an error on set point.
In the final set, the Knights punished 20 kills and hit .515 (20-3-33) but CCNY actually had a better percentage at .520 with 15 winners (15-2-25). There were seven ties and four lead changes in the game. CCNY held a 16-11 lead after a combined block. Boyle floored an assist from Rodriguez for No. 2500 as NJCU cut it to 16-12, but CCNY would maintain two-point margins, including 19-17 and 20-18 after two kills from Williams. After NJCU tied it at 21-21, CCNY regained a two-point, 23-21 cushion on a combo block. NJCU fought back with three consecutive kills, spread amongst Kucza, Boyle and Lisk, for a 24-23 lead. Ng tied it at 24-24 with a winner before Lisk buried a shot for a 25-24 edge. On its second match point, Joubert pounded a kill to seal it.
