NEW YORK, NY (NJCUGothicKnights.com) |
After winning two one-run games on its spring trip to Florida this season, New Jersey City University was unable to replicate the close-game success in its first road doubleheader of its northern schedule as Hunter College twice defeated the Gothic Knights by a single run, sweeping a non-conference doubleheader from NJCU, 7-6 and 3-2, on Saturday on Randall's Island Field #12.

NJCU fell to 6-6 on the season and had its three-game winning streak snapped with the loss. Hunter improved to 2-1-1. The Hawks lead the all-time series, 22-12.

Sophomore third baseman REBECCA SATZ (Morris Plains, NJ/Morristown) had a hit in each contest to extend her hitting streak to 12.

Freshman center fielder CASEY PEREZ (West New York, NJ/Academy of the Holy Angels) achieved what is believed to be a single-game school record five stolen bases in game one of the doubleheader. After 12 games, NJCU, as a team, has successfully stolen 49 of 50 base attempts.

In game one NJCU scored three times in the first inning and led 4-0 before Hunter scored five times in the bottom of the third inning. The Knights moved back in front, 6-5, with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth before the Hawks scored twice in the bottom of the inning and held NJCU off the scoreboard in the final two innings.

Senior first baseman TAYLOR LANG (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) had two RBIs, going 1-for-4 and senior second baseman DANIELLE DELFINO (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep) walked three times and scored twice.

Junior shortstop MEGAN GINTER (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) walked twice and moved into third place in program history in steals. She had two in the game including the 50th of her career. Perez added five stolen bases as NJCU had nine as a team in the loss.

For Hunter, freshman first baseman Angelica Iacovetti (Imperial Beach, CA) had two RBIs and one homerun. She also pitched the final 1.2 innings in relief, allowing one hit with four strikeouts and no walks to record the save.

Freshman second baseman Julia Lipovac (Astoria, NY) was 2-for-4 with one run. Sophomore third baseman Molly Meehan (Pearl River, NY) was 2-for-2.

Junior right-hander Lauren Stensland (Babylon, NY) threw the first 4.1 innings but walked seven and struck out one, allowing six runs (four earned) and three hits. Freshman Amanda Annicaro (Howard Beach, NY), the second of three Hunter pitchers, earned her first career win in relief. In one inning, she allowed only one hit and one walk.

Junior righty JESS MUCERINO (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park) did not allow an earned run as all seven scored by the Hawks were directly impacted by errors. In 6.0 innings, she did take the loss (2-3), allowing eight hits with one K and two walks.

In the first inning, Ginter led off with a hit by pitch, stole second and moved to third on a single by Mucerino, who also stole second. Satz drove in the first run with a groundout and rookie catcher MARISSA BARISO (Hewitt, NJ/West Milford) made it 2-0 with another ground ball. Delfino walked with two outs and scored on an RBI double to center by Lang for a 3-0 lead.

NJCU extended the lead to 4-0 in the third inning as Satz led off with a walk, moved to third when Delfino doubled to center, and scored on a ground ball by Lang.

In the bottom of the third inning NJCU committed two errors and Hunter capitalized, scoring five times for a 5-4 lead. After scoring twice with two outs on a dropped fly ball when the inning should have been over, Iacovetti lifted a two-run homer to center to tie it before senior left fielder  Christina Baker (Brooklyn, NY) gave the Hawks a 5-4 lead with an RBI double to left.

In the fourth, NJCU had a chance to tie it when Perez had a one-out walk and stole second, and Ginter walked, before the speedy duo swiped second and third. But with one out, Mucerino lined out and Satz grounded out, stranding two runners.

NJCU did get the two runs it needed in the top of the fifth to gain a 6-5 lead as Hunter committed two errors in the inning. Bariso, who reached on a leadoff error, scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore designated player SAMANTHA RUDICK (Closter, NJ/Northern Valley Regional-Demarest) to tie it. Delfino, who had walked, scored on a fielding error.

In the fifth, Hunter went back in front, 7-6. A leadoff single and a dropped fly ball put two runners on base for the Hawks, and both scored on a bases-loaded passed ball.

NJCU loaded the bases in the top of the sixth when Mucerino reached on a dropped fly ball, Satz singled and Delfino walked before Iacovetti entered in relief and struck out the final two hitters of the inning to preserve the lead. After Hunter was retired in the seventh inning, Perez had a one-out single for NJCU in the top of the seventh, and quickly stole second and third, giving the Knights a chance to tie it again. But Iacovetti struck out Ginter and coerced a groundout by Mucerino to end the game.
**********************GAME 2: HUNTER 3, NEW JERSEY CITY 2**********************
In a game-two pitchers duel between Iacovetti and NJCU sophomore righty ASHLEY O'BEIRNE (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Immaculate Conception), Hunter scored twice in the second inning to take a 2-1 lead and after NJCU had tied it in the third, the Hawks won it with a single run in the bottom of the sixth.

Iacovetti earned her first win of the season, striking out seven batters against one walk, with two runs (one earned) and four hits allowed in 7.0 innings. O'Beirne struck out four and walked two, against three runs and seven hits in 6.0 innings, dropping to 4-3 on the season.

Ginter was 2-for-2 with a run, double, and her 16th steal in 16 attempts. Satz had her second triple of the season with one RBI. Bariso tallied NJCU's other hit. Baker was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Meehan was 2-for-3 with one run.

NJCU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Ginter led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mucerino. Hunter claimed a 2-1 lead in the third. Junior catcher Arielle Zieff (Staten Island, NY) and Meehan singled and a wild pitch advanced the runners into scoring position. Baker tied the game with an RBI single to right before Meehan scored on another wild pitch.

NJCU managed to tie it in the third inning when Perez reached on an error, moved to third on a double to center by Ginter, before Satz had an RBI single to third base. In the bottom of the third, Hunter had runners on second and third with one out before O'Beirne got Zieff to line out and Iacovetti to pop out and kept it tied at 2-2.

In the fourth and fifth innings, the teams couldn't get more than one runner on base and NJCU went in order in the top of the sixth. But in the bottom of the frame, Hunter scored the eventual winning run when Iacovetti led off with a double, Meehan singled and Baker had a sacrifice fly to center. NJCU was retired 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh to seal it.

NJCU is back at home on Wednesday, March 23 at 4 p.m. when it hosts the College of Mount Saint Vincent in a non-conference doubleheader at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex.
