HOWELL, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | No. 7 ranked New Jersey City University went 2-2 overall and is in third place in the conference with five matches remaining after the opening day of the third Northeast Conference event of the season on Saturday at Howell Lanes.

NJCU, ranked seventh among schools in Division I, II and III, is now 80-31 overall (.721) and 16-6 in the conference (.727) after posting wins over #8 Kutztown University, 920-890, and Long Island University, 906-897, with losses to #13 Adelphi University, 926-888 and #9 Sacred Heart University , 1025-981. NJCU is 28-8 (.778) in two seasons as an associate member of the Division I Northeast Conference.

With 80 victories, the 2010-11 season is now the third winningest in program history. Only the 2007-08 (89-37) and 2008-09 (88-37) teams won more matches than this year's club.

NJCU, the defending NEC regular season champions, entered the day in a four-way tie with #1 ranked Fairleigh Dickinson University, Kutztown and Sacred Heart for first place in the league. FDU went 4-0 on the opening day of the meet to move into first place overall in the NEC with an 18-4 record—two games ahead of NJCU; Sacred Heart, which went 3-1 on the day, is in second place at 17-5.

All four matches were five-person traditional team games and NJCU's top performer was sophomore KELLY DAUNNO (Carteret, NJ/Carteret), who posted two 200 games and finished with a four-game average of 195.00 and 780 total wood (201-190-201-188). Also for NJCU, freshman #ASHLEY JOHNSON# (North Arlington, NJ/North Arlington) subbed into the action late in the first match. In three full games, she had 549 total wood and a 183.00 average (190-172-187). Junior AMY BREHM (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) added a 181.75 average and 727 pinfall (181-179-172-195).

In the opening match against Adelphi, NJCU fell to 5-3 and 2-1 in the league against Adelphi this season, a team it has a commanding 26-13 all-time record against. The Panthers went 3-1 on the day to even their conference mark at 11-11. KELLY DAUNNO led NJCU with a 201 and JENNIFER DAUNNO added a 192 in the loss.

and the first in NEC action (1-2) as KELLY DAUNNO and ASHLEY JOHNSON each rolled a 190, and all players tallied at least a 179. NJCU still leads the all-time series, 15-13.

NJCU has never lost to Long Island University and improved to 11-0 all-time against the Blackbirds, including 4-0 this year and 3-0 in NEC competition, in a match that was the Gothic Knights' closest of the day—a 13-pin, 906-897 decision. KELLY DAUNNO's 201 paced NJCU, who also received a 191 from Drejerwski. LIU went 3-1 on the day, only losing to NJCU.

Among the schools NJCU is competing with for a berth in the NCAA championship is long-time rival Sacred Heart and the #9 ranked Pioneers clinched the season series by posting the second highest team game score of the 40 rolled on the day (FDU, 1,028), winning 1025-981. NJCU's highest score of the day was not enough as the Pioneers led from the first frame and never were caught. SHU is 5-2 against NJCU this season and 2-1 in the NEC. NJCU received a 213 by JENNIFER DAUNNO, and a 198 and 195 from Drejerwski and Brehm. NJCU pulled with 739-701 after the eighth frame but SHU, which was carrying four strikes into the ninth frame, used its marks to win the match by 44 pins.

NJCU will compete in the final day of NEC competition on Sunday, March 6 beginning at 9:30 a.m. The Knights will face #19 Saint Peter's College, #15 St. Francis College (NY), event host Monmouth University, #1 ranked and first-place FDU, and Saint Francis University (Pa.).
