New Jersey City University hit .307 as a team with 34 kills and senior libero CHRIS EDRA (Edison, NJ/J.P. Stevens) defended 12 digs to draw a little closer to the program's all-time defensive record as Brooklyn College was limited to just .095 on attack in NJCU's 3-0 (25-15, 26-24, 25-13) sweep of a non-conference match at the West Quad Gymnasium on Monday night. NJCU is 21-0 all-time against the Bulldogs.
 
NJCU improved to 9-11 overall, while Brooklyn dropped to 5-12. NJCU's hitting percentage improved each game, before landing a .526 attack rate in set three with 11 kills (11-1-19).
 
Edra's 12 digs gives him 1,074 in 371 career sets. He is now 31 shy of equaling second place in program history and 60 shy of the program standard of 1,134. Edra also had a .955 reception percentage in the match with just one error in 22 attempts.
 
Sophomore outside hitter MICHAL KUCZA (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) swatted a match-best 13 kills, hitting .400 (13-5-20) while senior setter JORGE RODRIGUEZ (Havana, Cuba/Memorial) distributed 27 assists and eight digs, serving four aces. He had a .443 setting percentage.
 
Sophomore middle blocker CORRADO DeVINCENZO (Bayonne, NJ/County Prep) posted a .600 attack percentage with seven winners (7-1-10) and two blocks (one solo) and junior outside hitter KENNY LISK (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) hit .538 with seven kills and no errors (7-0-13), adding six digs.
 
For Brooklyn, freshman middle hitter Alexander Shlivko (Brooklyn, NY) collected 11 kills and junior outside hitter David Choy (Brooklyn, NY) added eight kills. Senior setter Gene Tom (Brooklyn, NY) totaled 15 assists.
 
NJCU only had nine kills in the opening set but held Brooklyn to a negative attack rate with four kills and 10 errors (4-10-26, -.231). Leading 12-10, NJCU scored five of the next six points to claim a 17-11 cushion. Kills by Kucza and Lisk extended the advantage to 21-14 and Lisk served an ace before NJCU won by 10 points, 25-15.
 
The second set was more competitive with each school registering 14 kills; Brooklyn outhit NJCU,

.273 to .250, and there were 12 ties and five lead changes. Kucza had six kills in the set and Lisk and DeVincenzo combined for seven kills on 14 swings. Choy had five kills in nine attempts for the Bulldogs. NJCU led 16-12 before Brooklyn manufactured an 8-2 run for a 20-18 lead. Two kills by Shlivko tied it at 17-17 before two NJCU attack errors helped BC gain the lead. BC grabbed a three-point lead, 22-19, after another NJCU error. The Knights roared back for the next four points, with kills by Kucza and DeVincenzo tying it, and a Rodriguez ace made it 23-22. Each team committed another error and NJCU held a 24-23 cushion. Choy landed a kill for a 24-24 tie, but NJCU scored the next two points, winning the set on a kill by Lisk.
 
The third set was all NJCU as the Gothic Knights amassed an incredible 92 percent sideout percentage (12-13). Four players had multiple kills in the match. Freshman middle blocker NATHAN JOUBERT (Union City, NJ/Union City) landed all three of his kills during the match in the final game, hitting .500 (3-0-6). NJCU never trailed and after an early 5-5 tie, scored the next seven points for a 12-5 advantage, which expanded to 15-7. An ace by Rodriguez sealed the 12-point decision in the final set, 25-13.
 
NJCU returns home on Tuesday, March 8 at 7 p.m. with a North East Collegiate Volleyball Association Metro Division match against No. 10 ranked Philadelphia Biblical University.
