After 20 hits and a five-run sixth inning capped by a game-tying two-run single by senior first baseman TAYLOR LANG (Carteret, NJ/Carteret), it was an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning by sophomore third baseman REBECCA SATZ (Morris Plains, NJ/Morristown) that was the difference as New Jersey City University bounced back from 6-1 deficit and rallied to overcome Eastern Nazarene College, 9-8. The game was the second game of the season for the Gothic Knights on March 7 at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at the Cape Coral Sports Complex.

NJCU (1-1) trailed 8-3 entering the bottom of the sixth inning before the wheels began turning and 10 players came to the plate, producing the five game-tying runs and seven hits. ENC, members of the Commonwealth Coast Conference, fell to 1-2 with the loss. NJCU stranded 11 runners in the contest.

Satz finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs and one run while Lang posted three RBIs in a 3-for-4 performance. Junior shortstop MEGAN GINTER (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) was 4-for-5 with two RBIs and a triple. Senior second baseman DANIELLE DELFINO (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep) was 3-for-4 with three runs, two doubles and one RBI out of the leadoff spot.

Also for NJCU, junior right-handed pitcher JESS MUCERINO (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park) scored twice, batting 3-for-4. Sophomore right fielder SAMANTHA RUDICK (Closter, NJ/Northern Valley Regional-Demarest) hit 2-for-4 and senior catcher ALEXANDRA DiIORIO (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) had a triple.

For the Lions, senior center fielder Amber Burns (Fall River, MA) was 2-for-4 with four RBIs, including a two-run homerun and a two-RBI double and senior shortstop Bethany Greenfield (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany Hills) scored three times, batting 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and a double. Freshman first baseman Cayla Clinkscale (Wichendon, MA) batted 2-for-3 with two steals.

Mucerino earned her first win since transferring to NJCU from the County College of Morris. She allowed seven earned runs and eight hits with two strikeouts and six walks. Sophomore righty Jamie Block (Pembroke, MA) lost for ENC, allowing nine runs and 20 hits in 6.1 innings, with three walks and one strikeout.

ENC quickly grabbed a 6-0 lead with four runs in the first and two more in the second inning. In the opening inning, Greenfield singled to lead off before the Lions grounded out twice. With two gone, Burns homered. An RBI single by Clinkscale followed a pair of Lions hits and freshman third baseman Samantha Losano (Elverta, CA) stole home. In the second inning, Greenfield doubled and with two outs and two on base after a walk, Burns doubled to right center for a 6-0 lead.

NJCU cut the lead in half with a run in the third and two more in the fifth. Delfino led off the third with a double, Ginter singled and Satz followed with a single to left center for an RBI. In the fifth, Ginter led off with a double but was thrown out at third on a single by Satz. With two outs, NJCU came through as Mucerino doubled to left center and Lang singled her home, trimming the

deficit to 6-3.

Meanwhile, Mucerino limited the Lions in the middle innings, allowing just one base runner in the third, fourth and fifth innings. ENC would break through with two runs in the top of the sixth, as one runner reached on an error, and both base runners in the inning scored on wild pitches.

But NJCU bounced back with the game-tying sixth inning. DiIorio led off with a triple and freshman center fielder CASEY PEREZ (West New York, NJ/Academy of the Holy Angels) singled. Delfino doubled to score DiIorio, and she and Perez came around on a two-RBI triple to right by Ginter as NJCU trimmed the deficit to 8-6. Satz flew out and Ginter, trying to tag up for a sacrifice fly, was called out for leaving early, with the Knights still down by a pair of runs.

Freshman left fielder  MARISSA BARISO (Hewitt, NJ/West Milford) walked and Mucerino singled to keep the inning alive and Lang came through with a two-run game-tying single to right field, scoring both players. Rudick doubled and moved Lang to third before a groundout ended the inning with the game even at 8-8.

In the top of the seventh, Mucerino allowed just a lone walk and concluded the inning with a pickoff throw to first. Then in the bottom of the seventh, NJCU won it. Delfino walked with one out and moved to second on a single by Ginter. That brought up Satz who doubled to right field, scoring Delfino for the improbable 9-8 victory.
