CAPE CORAL, FL (NJCUGothicKnights.com) |
Junior shortstop MEGAN GINTER (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI but Neumann University used a sixth-inning grand slam to provide important insurance runs and defeated New Jersey City University, 7-3, in the 2011 softball opener for both schools on March 7 at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at the Cape Coral Sports Complex.

Neumann (1-0) only totaled four hits in the game and expanded a 3-1 lead over NJCU (0-1) after two innings with the grand slam that followed scoreless frames in the third, fourth and fifth.

Sophomore third baseman REBECCA SATZ (Morris Plains, NJ/Morristown) was 2-for-4 with a double. Sophomore right-hander ASHLEY O'BEIRNE (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Immaculate Conception) took the loss (0-1), despite allowing just four hits. She struck out four but walked six and allowed six earned runs. She retired Neumann in order in the third, fourth and fifth innings, and at one point set aside 10 consecutive batters.

The Neumann Knights' big hit came off the bat of sophomore left fielder Alyssa Falsetti (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert), who finished with four RBIs and one hit.. Senior shortstop Kim Kirkpatrick (Springfield, PA) was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Senior righty Brittany Campbell (Levittown, PA) won for Neumann, allowing one run and four hits with two strikeouts and two walks over 4.0 innings. Rookie left-hander Carley Gustin (Hawley, PA) earned a three-inning save, allowing two unearned runs and three hits with three Ks and one walk.

NJCU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Ginter singled, stole second and came around on the throw. Satz doubled with one out but was stranded.

Neumann took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning. With one out, sophomore right fielder Mariah Ripken (Harve de Grace, MD), the niece of baseball Hall of Famer Cal Ripken, Jr., walked with one out and scored when Kirkpatrick hit a homer to right center. Neumann added a run in the second inning when a fly ball that should have been the third out of the inning, was dropped, scoring a run.

NJCU had a leadoff walk and a Ginter single with no outs in the fourth inning, but could not manufacture a run. NJCU, which stranded nine runners in the game, left two more on in the sixth.

In the bottom of the sixth, Neumann expanded its 3-1 lead. A leadoff walk and double, followed by a one-out single, loaded the bases, before Falsetti lifted her grand slam to center field. In the seventh, NJCU had three hits, including RBI singles by Ginter and rookie catcher MARISSA BARISO (Hewitt, NJ/West Milford), but couldn't make up the deficit and fell by four runs.
