BOX SCORE

CAPE CORAL, FL (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Ohio Wesleyan University only had four hits, but New Jersey City University committed five errors and the Battling Bishops scored three times in the fifth and twice in the seventh to grab a 5-1 win over NJCU in game four for the Gothic Knights at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on March 8 at the Northwest Cape Coral Complex.

OWU did not have a player with multiple hits, but improved to 3-1 with the win. NJCU fell to 1-3 after four games of its 2011 spring trip. All 11 hits in the game between the two schools were singles.

In defeat, junior right-hander JESS MUCERINO (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park) was 2-for-2 at the plate and was the hard luck loser on the mound (1-1). She did not allow an earned run and scattered four singles with a strikeout and three walks. Sophomore third baseman REBECCA SATZ (Morris Plains, NJ/Morristown) was 2-for-4 with one run.

OWU sophomore righty Amanda Barker (Granville, OH) was brilliant, striking out seven with one walk in 7.0 innings. She allowed one unearned run and seven hits. Freshman left fielder Jen Anderson (Kettering, OH) and freshman shortstop Erica Bryan (Wapakoneta, OH) each scored twice.

NJCU stranded nine runners in the game, including two in the bottom of the first and third innings. In the third, sophomore second baseman DANIELLE DELFINO (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep) and junior shortstop MEGAN GINTER (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) led off with singles but could not be batted in.

OWU got the runs it would need in the fifth as NJCU committed two errors. After one error put a pair of runners in scoring position with one out, Mucerino kept NJCU alive, inducing a grounder back to the mound, before making a throw for a tag at the plate, on a fielder's choice that should have been the final out of the inning. A wild pitch allowed a run to score and Anderson singled to left field scoring Bryan, who also reached on a fielder's choice, with the eventual winning run. A throwing error later in the inning allowed Anderson to come around for a 3-0 lead.

NJCU scored its lone run in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman center fielder CASEY PEREZ (West New York, NJ/Academy of the Holy Angels) reached on a leadoff error, advanced to third on a pair of groundouts, before coming home on an RBI single to center by Satz.

The Knights had a chance to tie it in the sixth inning as senior first baseman TAYLOR LANG (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) and Mucerino had back-to-back singles to lead off the frame, before a successful sacrifice bunt moved both players into scoring position, representing the tying runs with one out. But Barker fired consecutive strikeouts to end the inning. OWU added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh inning, with both runs plated on throwing errors as NJCU was charged with three miscues in the inning.
