Worcester Polytechnic Institute scored three times in the second and third innings and limited New Jersey City University to three hits as WPI defeated NJCU, 6-4, in game three for the Gothic Knights at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on March 8 at the Northwest Cape Coral Complex.

All three hits for NJCU (1-2) went for extra bases as the Knights scored twice in the third and sixth innings to stay alive. The Engineers, members of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), improved to 3-2 with the win.

NJCU rookie catcher MARISSA BARISO (Hewitt, NJ/West Milford) slammed her first career homerun in the sixth inning, and finished 1-for-3. Junior shortstop MEGAN GINTER (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) and sophomore third baseman REBECCA SATZ (Morris Plains, NJ/Morristown) each had an RBI double in the loss.

WPI was led by sophomore second baseman Emily Hartzell (Brunswick, ME) with three RBIs on a three-run third-inning homerun, while batting 3-for-4. Sophomore catcher Erin Beaulieu (Bethany, CT) and sophomore left fielder Katherine Fitton (Lebanon, CT) collected two hits apiece.

Junior Erin Flaherty (Stoughton, MA) won for WPI (2-0), allowing four runs (two earned) and three hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Sophomore right-hander ASHLEY O'BEIRNE (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Immaculate Conception) took the loss (0-2), allowing six runs and 11 hits with four strikeouts and three walks.

After WPI threatened in the first inning before stranding a pair of runners, the Engineers took the lead for good in the second inning. Following a pair of one-out singles, Hartzell lifted a three-run homer over the left field fence.

NJCU made it a one-run lead with two in the bottom of the third. Rookie center fielder CASEY PEREZ (West New York, NJ/Academy of the Holy Angels) reached on a one-out error, stole second and scored on a two-out double to right center by Ginter. Satz also doubled to right center, scoring Ginter.

WPI threatened again in the fifth after an error put two runners on base before O'Beirne induced a groundout. NJCU went in order in the bottom of the inning. Then in the sixth inning freshman center fielder Nicole McDonough (Abington, MA) drove in a run when she reached on a fielder's choice and scored the eventual game-winning run on an RBI double to center by freshman designated player Maddie Willer (Penfield, NY). Beaulieu added an RBI single for the sixth run.

In the sixth inning, Satz led off with a walk and Bariso drilled a two-run homerun to left field, trimming the deficit to 6-4. But Flaherty recovered and retired the final six batters of the sixth and seventh innings in order to end the game.
