In the second game, NJCU had the tying run on third base and the winning run in scoring position but failed to capitalize after scoring all five of its runs in the final three innings.
**********************GAME 1: STATEN ISLAND 4, NEW JERSEY CITY 3**********************
In game one, Bariso, Delfino and Lang were each 2-for-3 with one run and senior right fielder JORDAN POTTER (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep) was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a triple.
CSI received a 3-for-4 effort from junior third baseman Kaitlyn Flynn (Staten Island, NY), who had two RBIs and her third homerun of the season. She became the nation's leading hitter during the game, raising her average to .600, before batting 1-for-3 in the nightcap. CSI also received a 2-for-4 showing from sophomore right fielder Kristi Dillon (Staten Island, NY).
Junior righty Danielle Ponsiglione (Staten Island, NY) earned the complete-game win (4-3), allowing three runs and eight hits with one strikeout and no walks over 69 pitches. NJCU sophomore righty ASHLEY O'BEIRNE (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Immaculate Conception) took the loss (7-7), allowing just one earned run and nine hits with two walks.
CSI opened the scoring in the second inning. After an error by O'Beirne allowed a runner to reach second base, senior center fielder Jennifer Volpe (Staten Island, NY) had an RBI single.
NJCU moved in front with two runs in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Delfino singled and stole second—the 85th swipe of her career and just four shy of equaling the program record (89). Lang doubled to left center to tie the game before Potter ripped a triple over the lead of the Dillon, leaping in right field, for a 2-1 margin.
But CSI scored three times in the top of the third for the winning margin. After the leadoff batter reached on an error, Flynn put the Dolphins back on top, 3-2, with a two-run homer to left field. Senior second baseman Raechel Strobel (Staten Island, NY) singled to right and advanced two bases on a fielding error, before scoring on an RBI single to center by Ponsiglione.
In the sixth inning, NJCU was able to draw closer as Bariso, Delfino and Lang had three consecutive singles with one out. A sacrifice fly by Potter trimmed the deficit to 4-3. But the Knights grounded out to end the inning, stranding two runners on the bases.
In the seventh, NJCU made a big defensive play when Dillon was caught stealing home, to maintain the one-run deficit. However, NJCU was retired in order in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.
**********************GAME 2: STATEN ISLAND 6, NEW JERSEY CITY 5**********************
Trailing 6-3, NJCU scored twice in the bottom of the sixth and once in the seventh, but despite outhitting the Dolphins, 11-7, couldn't tie it as Staten Island squeaked out a 6-5 win.
Bariso was 3-for-4 with a run and two doubles and sophomore third baseman REBECCA SATZ (Morris Plains, NJ/Morristown) was 2-for-4 with two runs and smashed her fourth homerun of the season.
Delfino and Lang each were 2-for-4; Delfino had her eighth double of the season and one RBI and Lang scored once. Freshman center fielder JANISSA CARDONA (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) was 1-for-3 with a two-RBI double.
For CSI, rookie pitcher/outfielder Stefanie Solari (Old Bridge, NJ/St. John Vianney) had two RBIs while Strobel and senior first baseman Joanna Tepedino (Staten Island, NY) were each 1-for-3 and scored twice.
Solari earned her first career win (1-2), allowing four runs and seven hits in five innings with two strikeouts and one walk. Ponsiglione picked up a save, securing the win by allowing one unearned run and four hits in 2.0 innings, fanning one. NJCU junior righty JESS MUCERINO (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park) suffered the loss (4-8), allowing five earned runs and seven hits in 7.0 innings, with three walks and one strikeout.
CSI scored twice in the second inning. Tepedino walked and advanced to third on a fielder's choice and a single by Ponsiglione, before she scored on a wild pitch. Solari had a sacrifice fly to score Ponsiglione. CSI added a third run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly.
NJCU drew with one run, 3-2 with a two-run fifth inning. Lang and Potter singled before racing home on a double to left center by Cardona.
CSI tacked on three runs in the sixth inning. Flynn doubled, advanced on a wild pitch before scoring on another wild pitch. Tepedino doubled and Strobel followed with a single. A one-out RBI grounder by Solari made it 5-2, before Volpe had an RBI single that notched the eventual winning run.
NJCU fought back with two runs in the sixth inning. Satz crushed a 2-0 pitch to center field, for the fifth homer of her career. Bariso nearly went back-to-back, doubling off the left field fence and Delfino laced a double to left field with no outs to trim the deficit to 6-4. Ponsiglione entered in relief and Lang singled to put runners on the corners, before Ponsiglione retired the next three batters in order to end the inning and strand two runners.
In the bottom of the seventh, NJCU manufactured a two-out rally. Satz, Bariso and Delfino had consecutive singles and Satz scored from second on a fielding error in left field on Delfino's hit. With Bariso at third representing the tying run, and Delfino on second, Lang flew out to deep center to end the game.
NJCU will host William Paterson University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader on Friday, April 12 (3 p.m.) at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex, in a makeup of a rainout postponement from April 12.
