JERSEY CITY, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) |
New Jersey City University freshman catcher MARISSA BARISO (Hewitt, NJ/West Milford) smashed her sixth homerun of the season and junior shortstop MEGAN GINTER (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) uncorked her second, but William Paterson University scored a season-high 11 runs in game one, and swept a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader from the Gothic Knights, winning 11-6 and 7-2 on Friday at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex.

William Paterson improves to 15-7 overall and 5-3 in the NJAC and leads the all-time series, 29-2. The Gothic Knights (11-17, 0-8 NJAC) drop their sixth straight since evening its record at 11-11 on April 7. The Pioneers entered the day with 79 runs on the season in 20 games, before collecting 18 in the twinbill.

Ginter and Bariso's homeruns each came in game one, as NJCU increased its 2011 season mark to 14. That moved past the 2000 club's mark of 13 homers into second place on the single-season charts. The program record is 15 achieved in 2008.

Meanwhile, Bariso, who already owns the single-season program record for homeruns by a rookie, became only the second player in the 31-year history of the program to hit at least six homeruns in a season. The only other player to accomplish the feat was all-time great Jen Barletta, who did it three years in a row from 1999-2001, including a program record seven in 2000.

Ginter was a combined 5-for-6 for NJCU in the doubleheader. WPU senior second baseman Lindsey Nadolny (Belford, NJ/Middletown North) went a combined 5-for-9 with three runs and three RBIs and senior first baseman Jenna Vitale (Kenilworth, NJ/David Brearley) was 4-for-8 with three RBIs and two runs in the pair of games.

In game one, WPU, which had not scored more than eight runs in a game this year, score four times in the second and three in the third to build a 7-2 lead, and generated 13 hits in the five-run victory.

Freshman designated player Jessica Warner (Runnemede, NJ/Triton) hit a three-run homerun in the third inning—the first round-tripper of her career—and tallied five RBIs and two runs in a 3-for-4 performance. Nadolny was 3-for-5 with two doubles, one run and one RBI. Vitale was 2-for-4 with two runs, one RBI and a double. Junior left fielder Raquel Roder (Hoboken, NJ/Hoboken) was 2-for-4.

Ginter scored three times, swiped three steals, giving her 26 overall and batted 2-for-2 with a solo homerun and two walks. The 26 steals is now third most in single-season school history. Bariso was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, one homer, one triple and one run. Senior right fielder JORDAN POTTER (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep) chipped in a 2-for-3 effort with a run and RBI and junior center fielder JESS MUCERINO (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park) added a 2-for-3, one-run showing.

Sophomore righty Kelsey Hand (Mountainville, NY) won for the Pioneers (5-2), despite allowing six runs and 10 hits with three walks and one K. Junior righty Michele Graham (Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne), the winner in game two, pitched a perfect 1.1 innings of relief to close the game. NJCU sophomore ASHLEY O'BEIRNE (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Immaculate Conception) took the loss (7-8), allowing 11 runs, 13 hits and five walks.

NJCU scored first in the bottom of the opening inning as Ginter walked, stole second and third and scored on a throwing error on the second swipe.

WPU claimed the lead for good with four in the second inning. An RBI single followed by a two-base error made it 3-1 before Nadolny added an RBI double. Warner's three-run blast in the third extended the lead to 7-1.

Ginter had a one-out solo homer in the third inning and Bariso tripled before being stranded at third. WPU scored twice in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Vitale and a Roder RBI double. Trailing 9-2, NJCU drew within five when Ginter singled and Bariso followed with a two-run shot to center, cutting it to 9-4.

Each team scored twice in the sixth inning. Warner notched a two-run ground-rule double in the top of the frame before Potter had an RBI double in the second half of the inning. She eventually scored on an error.

runs, a homer and her 11th double of the year. Vitale was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and freshman shortstop Katelyn Miele (Flanders, NJ/Pope John XXIII) was 1-for-2 with two runs in a leadoff role.

Ginter was 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Knights. Sophomore third baseman REBECCA SATZ (Morris Plains, NJ/Morristown) was 2-for-3 with one run and her 11th double. Mucerino took the loss (4-9), allowing seven runs and nine hits with seven walks and three strikeouts.

WPU scored twice in the first inning when Miele walked and scored on Nadolny's first homerun of the season, a shot to right field. The Pioneers added two more runs in the third inning. Nadolny led off with a double and was knocked in with a single by Vitale. A bases loaded walk made it 4-0. The Pioneers increased the lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning as Miele led off with a double and scored on a groundout by Vitale.

NJCU plated two runs in the top of the fifth as Satz led off with a double and moved to third on a double by Mucerino. Potter had an RBI infield single and Ginter added another RBI single, before the Knights left the bases loaded. The Pioneers countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning on a double by junior third baseman Jessica Maciolek (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) and a sacrifice fly by Miele.

NJCU will host Rutgers University-Camden in a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 16 (1 p.m.) at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex. The Pioneers face Rutgers-Newark at 12 p.m. in Newark, NJ.
