JERSEY CITY, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) |
New Jersey City University tied its all-time single-season homerun record with a late rally in game two, but fell one run short as Rutgers University-Camden won a twice postponed New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader from the Gothic Knights, winning 4-1 in game one and 6-5 in the nightcap, on Monday at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex.

Camden, which leads the all-time series, 31-22, including wins in the last five games, evens its record at 13-13 and 5-5 in the NJAC. NJCU (11-19, 0-10 NJAC) dropped its eighth in a row.

In a season of close contests, NJCU lost a game by a mere one run for the sixth time, by two or less for the ninth time and by four or fewer runs for the 12th and 13th time.

In defeat, sophomore third baseman REBECCA SATZ (Morris Plains, NJ/Morristown) was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs in game two and shaved the deficit to one with her fifth homerun in the seventh inning of game two as NJCU fell one run short. That homer was the 15th of the season for the Knights, equaling the single-season record of 15 established in 2008. Satz increased her career hits total to 92 in 70 games as she attempts to become the 11th member of NJCU's 100 hit club and only the second to reach the milestone in two seasons.

Camden was led by junior right-hander Amanda Cassella (Atco, NJ/Hammonton) who was victorious in both games to up her record to 12-8. The Raptors hit one homer in each contest.

After being rained out on Saturday and Sunday, the clubs finally hit the field for game one and each squad received a quality pitching performance. Cassella allowed just five hits and one unearned run with seven strikeouts and two walks in 7.0 innings to earn the win.

NJCU sophomore righty ASHLEY O'BEIRNE (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Immaculate Conception) took the loss (7-9) allowing just two earned runs and seven hits in her complete game effort, striking out three and walking five.

Camden had two players with multiple hits. Sophomore shortstop Kaitlyn Gaskill (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Memorial) was 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI. She notched her fourth homer of the season in the top of the fifth inning—a two-out solo shot to center that accounted for the final Raptors run. Junior catcher Erika Drayton (Blackwood, NJ/Triton Regional) was 2-for-4 with a run and RBI.

Rookie catcher MARISSA BARISO (Hewitt, NJ/West Milford) was 2-for-3 for NJCU. Satz, who entered the doubleheader as the most difficult player in the NJAC to strikeout—with just one K in

106 plate appearances, struck out twice in the game.

Camden scored the runs it would need with a three spot in the third inning. Sophomore third baseman Danielle Meng (Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) had a leadoff double. With two outs, Drayton had an RBI single to center and advanced to third on a fielding error. Cassella followed with a walk and advanced to second on a fielding error that scored Drayton. Sophomore leftfielder Christina Tamburrino (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown)plated the final run of the frame on a single to left. The final two runs of the inning were unearned.

NJCU scored a lone run in the fourth inning as junior shortstop MEGAN GINTER (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) walked, advanced on a passed ball, moved to third on a single by Bariso and scored on a Camden throwing error.
**********************GAME 2: RUTGERS-CAMDEN 6, NEW JERSEY CITY 5**********************
In game two, Cassella allowed one earned run (five total) and seven hits with five strikeouts and three walks as Camden held off a late Gothic Knight surge of three runs in the final two innings. NJCU led 2-1 after three innings before the Raptors scored four runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth to claim a 6-2 cushion.

Satz was 3-for-4 with the three RBIs and senior second baseman DANIELLE DELFINO (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep) went 2-for-3 with one run and her 86th career stolen base—three shy of the program record. Bariso scored twice.

Freshman designated player Gabrielle Colon (Buena, NJ/Buena Regional) was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, one run and her third homer of the season while Camden senior second baseman Brooke Keenan (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) was 2-for-3. Tamburrino and junior rightfielder Vicki D'Anduono (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Township) each scored twice for the visitors.

NJCU scored a pair of unearned runs in the third on an error and two hits, including an RBI single by Satz, who knocked in Delfino after she had a two-out single and stole second. Camden cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third. D'Anduono doubled with one out. With two away, Drayton sent a fly ball to left field that was dropped, allowing the unearned run to score.

The Raptors took the lead for good with four runs in the fourth. With one out and a runner on, Colon hit a two-run homer to right field. With two outs, Meng doubled and D'Anduono walked. A throwing error allowed the third run of the inning to score before Keenan had an RBI single for the fourth run.

With two outs in the fifth inning, three consecutive singles by Tamburrino, Colon and junior centerfielder Lauren Hatzelhoffer (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) extended the lead to 6-2. NJCU scored once in the sixth inning as Satz singled and starting pitcher JESS MUCERINO (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park) was hit by a pitch. Senior first baseman TAYLOR LANG (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) walked to load the bases. With one out, rookie center fielder JANISSA CARDONA (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly that cut the deficit to 6-3, but NJCU stranded a run on third to end the inning.

NJCU made it interesting in the seventh. Ginter walked and with one away was called out at first base for leaving early. That proved to be a critical break for the Raptors because with two outs, Bariso reached on a fielding error and Satz hammered a two-run homer to center field, making it 6-5. Had Ginter not been called out at first base the game would have been tied and Camden would have batted in the bottom of the seventh. Instead, Mucerino struck out looking to end the game. Mucerino (4-10) took the loss, allowed just three earned runs with six strikeouts and two walks against six hits.
