With the wins, TCNJ improved to 22-10 and 8-6 in the NJAC and picked up four critical points in its bid for the conference tournament. NJCU (11-23, 0-14 NJAC) dropped its 12th in a row. TCNJ is 28-0 all-time in the series.
Bariso's two-run homerun, the lone hit for NJCU in game one, equaled the single-season record of seven by Jen Barletta (Edison, NJ) in 2000. Meanwhile, the homer was the 16th of the season for the program, topping the mark of 15 by the 2008 team.
**************GAME 1: THE COLLEGE of NEW JERSEY 10, NEW JERSEY CITY 2 (5 innings)**************
In game one, it was the pitching of junior right-hander Lauren Fitzsimmons (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) that was the difference as she allowed just one hit—the Bariso bomb—and two earned runs in five innings, with three strikeouts and three walks. She improved to 7-2 with the win.
TCNJ led 3-2 after the first inning, and put the game away offensively with two runs in the second and three runs in the fourth, adding single runs in the third and fifth frames. TCNJ did not have an extra base hit in the win.
Sophomore third baseman Kelly Hommen (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) was the lone Lions player with multiple hits and powered the attack with four RBIs, batting 3-for-4 with two runs. Junior left fielder Crystal Lee (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) and sophomore shortstop Ashley Sogluizzo (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) each scored twice. Lee had three stolen bases in the win, giving her 26 on the season, and Sogluizzo added two, as the Lions combined for nine steals in five innings.
Sophomore righty ASHLEY O'BEIRNE (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Immaculate Conception) took the loss (7-11), allowing five earned runs and seven hits with three walks.
TCNJ scored three times in the first inning on a two-run single by Hommen and an RBI groundout by senior designated player Caitlyn Seamster (Edison, NJ/John P. Stevens). In the bottom of the inning, junior shortstop MEGAN GINTER (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) walked, swiped her 28th base of the season, and then scored her NJAC-leading 32nd run of the season when Bariso slammed a pitch over the center field wall.
But TCNJ scored twice in the top of the second. Sophomore second baseman Michelle Casale (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) walked, stole second and third, and scored on a wild pitch. Meanwhile, Lee reached on a catcher's interference call, stole second as part of the double steal, and scored on a single by Hommen to make it a 5-2 lead.
The Lions added one run in the third on a sacrifice fly then tacked on four runs in the fourth when Sogluizzo was hit by a pitch, stole second, and scored on another RBI single by Hommen. Two more runs came in on an error and the eight-run rule came into effect after the Lions scored another unearned run.
**************GAME 2: THE COLLEGE of NEW JERSEY 5, NEW JERSEY CITY 3**************
In a more competitive second game, TCNJ scored four runs in the second inning and led 5-1 after five innings. NJCU chipped away with runs in the sixth and seventh innings before dropping a 5-3 decision. It was NJCU's ninth loss this season by two or fewer runs and 15th defeat by four or less runs.
Ginter was 1-for-2 and scored twice—her 33rd and 34th runs of the year—while stealing her 29th base of the season. Sophomore third baseman REBECCA SATZ (Morris Plains, NJ/Morristown) was 1-for-3 with one RBI and her 93rd career hit in her 74th game.
Junior righty JESS MUCERINO (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park) took the loss (4-12) despite allowing just one earned run in six innings. She struck out two, walked one and gave up seven hits. At the plate she was 1-for-3 with one RBI and her 15th steal of the season.
TCNJ's four RBIs in the game came from the top of the order. Lee, the leadoff hitter, was 1-for-4 with two RBIs, a triple and one run while Sogluizzo added two RBIs, going 1-for-3. Sophomore center fielder Liz Huttner (Princeton Junction, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) was 2-for-3. Seamster had a triple and run scored.
Freshman righty Alex Carisone (Branchburg, NJ/Rutgers Prep) earned the win (8-4), allowing three runs (two earned) and five hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
The real damage was done in the second inning when TCNJ scored four unearned runs via just two hits. Seamster tripled to leadoff but remained on third after a fielding error. With one out, another infield error allowed Seamster to score and instead of the inning being over, two runners remained on the bases. Lee tripled to center to drive in both runners before scoring herself on a squeeze bunt to third by Sogluizzo for a 4-0 lead.
NJCU got one run back in the third when Ginter walked, stole second and scored on a single to center by Mucerino. The Lions made it a 5-1 advantage in the fourth on an RBI single by Sogluizzo.
Trailing by four, NJCU made a late push. An RBI single to center in the sixth by Satz scored Ginter who had reached on an error. In the seventh, senior first baseman TAYLOR LANG (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) led off with a double and scored on an RBI groundout by rookie second baseman JANISSA CARDONA (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth), but the Knights couldn't manufacture enough offense to tie it.
NJCU is back in action on Tuesday, April 26 at 3 p.m. when it visits Richard Stockton College in Pomona, NJ for an NJAC doubleheader. TCNJ hosts Rowan University at the same time.
